tangyoulei Posted May 30, 2011 Share #1  Posted May 30, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Folks, I've just got me a used M8. When I look through the view finder, I noticed that the shutter speed display LED is very blurry. But at the same time, the focusing RF patch in the center of the VF is clear and sharp.  I tried to google online but don't get the information I need. Please advise why this happens and how to adjust it?  P.S. since the RFpatch and focusing looks clear, I assume the eye piece of the VF should be fine, am I right? (I do have a -1.0 and a -1.5 correction lenses if it's necessary to replace the eye piece.)  update: I did put on the -1.0 and -1.5 correction lenses to try but didn't see any improvement of the shutter speed readout. I also put on a pair of glass and that didn't help either...  update2: I also brought the m8 to a local camera store. A guy look though the VF and also confirmed that the m8/9 shouldn't look that blurry  ======= I doubt that is something I can fix by myself (I didn't have such experience nor the specific tool to dissemble Leica before). How much this might cost? Any idea? Thanks.

ho_co Posted May 30, 2011 Share #2 Â Posted May 30, 2011 Welcome to the forum! Â Sorry to see it's with a problem. Â The LEDs are on a circuit board that is optically projected and should appear clear and sharp to the eye. Sounds as if the display panel has slipped out of alignment. Â So far as I'm aware, only Leica can do that adjustment. Â See Mark Norton's Anatomy of the M8 (http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/21331-anatomy-leica-m8.html) for more details on the finder LED panel. tangyoulei Posted May 30, 2011 Author Share #3 Â Posted May 30, 2011 Howard, thanks for the warm welcome I am looking at Mark's post about Anatomy of M8. It seems this might not be a diy kind of job that I can handle... probably sending it out is the only choice for me. Hopefully Leica won't rip me off on this -- this might just be an unrealistic wish, beautiful but never comes true
marknorton Posted June 4, 2011 Share #4 Â Posted June 4, 2011 This other thread (http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/67857-anatomy-leica-m8-framelines.html#post702298) contains more detailed information on the framelines and LED display. Â The framelines, focus patch and LEDs should all be in the same plane so that if one is in focus, they all are and it's onto this plane that the rangeinfder image is projected, in the same way that all the viewfinder information in a DSLR viewfinder is co-planar with the focussing screen. Â It's possible that the LEDs are not correctly mounted in the frame carrier or possibly not even correctly mounted on the flex print. The frame carrier itself is adjustable in 3 planes - two screws attach it to the rangefinder through over-sized holes and there are washers to (potentially) adjust for height. Â In theory, it's one of the easier repairs since everything is accessible from the top without splitting the diecast shell.

gravastar Posted June 6, 2011 Share #6 Â Posted June 6, 2011 My M8.2u has developed exactly the same problem. Leica UK will send it to to Solms to get this fixed. At the moment I'm holding on to the camera since it doesn't stop me using it. It's summer and opportunities for infrared photography abound. Â I believe either the LED display or the associated rectangular plastic light pipe have become displaced and need to be realigned. Â Bob.

gravastar Posted June 10, 2011 Share #8 Â Posted June 10, 2011 Bob, did Leica UK mention to you how much this approximately will cost? Alex, see my PM for more details. At the moment cost is unknown. If there is a charge I think it shouldn't be too high since the LED display is accessible by removing only the top plate whose retaining screws can be reached via the camera base. I don't think the main camera body etc. will have to be opened. Â Â Bob.
