wilfredo Posted May 29, 2011 Share #1 Â Posted May 29, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I enjoy exploring the clinical sharpness of the 50mm Summilux ASPH. The metadata on this file says f/3.4 but I am almost certain the aperture was set to f/2.8. Playing with this image using the PSCS2 B&W filters was a fun experiment. (M8). wilfredo Posted May 29, 2011 Author Share #5 Â Posted May 29, 2011 Tim, Stuart, and Virgil thanks. I posted this in part for those considering purchasing this lens. It truly is clinically sharp. I'm still learning how to tame it :-).
roguewave Posted May 29, 2011 Share #6 Â Posted May 29, 2011 Wilfredo, yes this lens is "Clincally Sharp". I'm not sure it is the best tool for making portraits of ladies of her vintage.
jplomley Posted May 29, 2011 Share #7 Â Posted May 29, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Blistering sharp. But is this a good thing on this particular subject? Not criticizing, just throwing out the comment for discussion.
wilfredo Posted May 29, 2011 Author Share #8 Â Posted May 29, 2011 Ben and Jeff: Â I agree this lens may not be the best choice for every portrait, especially women. I'm actually thinking of getting a second 50mm lens that is less clinical. I regret selling my 50mm Hexanon but I needed the cash to buy the Lux. I'm considering an Elmar. Don't want to spend a lot of money.

Don't want to spend a lot of money. Â I have used an solder Summicron 5c for such purposes. It's more discrete & often just kinder. It's not an issue to sharpen as needed in PS. My Summicon 5c cost me $215 on Ebay. You don't need the latest & greatest for these kinds of portraits. All the Crons share a wonderful bokeh & easy, gradual transitions to the oof areas. pauledell Posted May 30, 2011 Share #12 Â Posted May 30, 2011 Wilfredo, Â An incredibly sharp picture with wonderful tones. Perhaps not as flattering for the sake of the subject though. Â Paul
wilfredo Posted May 31, 2011 Author Share #13 Â Posted May 31, 2011 Tri, Bob, and Paul: Thanks :-). Â Ben, Â I will explore my options. I love my 35mm Summicron ASPH, it's just sharp enough without overkill most of the time. There are times however when I do prefer sharpness. In a perfect world lenses would morph into what you need at the moment of shooting. :-). For those considering this lens, I hope you find this thread helpful.
