earleygallery Posted May 28, 2011 Share #3 Â Posted May 28, 2011 Why do YOU think you need it? Â My stock answer on these kinds of threads is, if you have to ask the question on a forum whether or not you need new piece of equipment X, then the answer is clearly no! vickko Posted May 28, 2011 Author Share #4  Posted May 28, 2011 Yeah, I just need reinforcement to not spend the money on another body.  Might be nice to have, but then, I'd be facing the work of selling it, and worrying about whether it would devaluate, or how much it would devaluate.  Better to get my mind off of it.  ....Vick   Why do YOU think you need it? My stock answer on these kinds of threads is, if you have to ask the question on a forum whether or not you need new piece of equipment X, then the answer is clearly no! otto.f Posted May 28, 2011 Share #5 Â Posted May 28, 2011 No you don't, unless you have heavy/long lenses that the R9 would give more counterweight than your R6.2. But most of all, don't trade it in, you' ll regret it, which is mostly the case with Leica gear btw
Carl E Posted May 31, 2011 Share #6 Â Posted May 31, 2011 I have an R4s, but once also had an R8 which I found to be superior in most respects, particularly with the R8 winder attached. R8s are pretty cheap on the market right now and I picked on up for 500 Euro last week (winder included) which I am looking forward to using. I would go for the R8 and not the R9 if I were you, and keep both the R6.2 and the R8.
SteveYork Posted June 1, 2011 Share #7 Â Posted June 1, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) If you'll use it, then it's worth it. The R9 has a very nice high point viewfinder. If it'll just sit on your shelf, then pass. Â A good compromise would be the R8. Less expensive with just about the same good stuff. Â All film bodies will probably depreciate greatly. But if you use them over the next decade or so, then you'll get value out of them.
zapp Posted June 1, 2011 Share #8  Posted June 1, 2011 I have the R6.2, do I need an R9? I have both ROM and 3 cam lenses.   Vick  Ask yourself: Why did you buy the R6.2 in the first place? The R9 is not a camera with additional features compared to an R6.2, it is represents a different philosophy. Want an electronic camera, get an R7, want a big and heavy camera with some really nice electornic features and better viewfinder get an R8/9 - no matter whether you use 3-cam or ROM lenses. ROM will make you feell better, but the advantages on the R8/9 are overrtressed.
garyp Posted June 1, 2011 Share #9 Â Posted June 1, 2011 The R8/9 has a broader shutter speed range, much improved metering range, the view finder is much improved, a higher flash sync speed, and a few other tidbits that none of the earlier R bodies have. I've owned/used most of the R bodies over the last 30 years, but since I started using R8 bodies in 2003 I have no desire for any of the earlier ones. As always, YMMV
RFNewcomer Posted June 2, 2011 Share #10 Â Posted June 2, 2011 I agree that the original question is an impossible one to answer, as such. Â I came to the world of Leica a year ago after years with Nikon, buying a used M7 to dip my foot in the rangefinder experience. And haven't regretted it. But I did yearn for a telephoto option, so an R was a natural choice. After some thought, I went for an R7 and was quite happy with it. Until the opportunity came along to acquire a mint-condition R9. It's a purchase I certainly haven't regretted. Â Compared to my R7, the R9 is better in every way and I am continually surprised by the negative comments I see about R8s/R9s. The R9 fits like the proverbial glove and is certainly not heavy or bulky compared to my F5. Quite the opposite. And it makes Leica's R glass shine! Â Obviously, an R9 is quite different from an R6.2, but you can use it how you want to, all the way from progam to fully manual. My recommendation is very simple: pick one up, feel how it sits in your hand, and look through the viewfinder. Like how it feels and what you see? If you do, you won't regret buying one.
