village idiot! Posted May 26, 2011 Share #1 Â Posted May 26, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm currently traveling in Spain and have lost the wide angle diffuser that clips on to the body of the SF 24D flash, Â Any recommendations on how to get around this other than buying a new one? Â I've used improved methods when I had a tilting head on an older flash but am uncertain with this type, especially since i like using the TTL feature. Â I'm traveling with a 28mm and a CV 12mm as my wides. Â Â All suggestions are appreciated, thanks.

swamiji Posted May 26, 2011 Share #2 Â Posted May 26, 2011 I am in the same situation except I am in China. I, however am willing to buy a replacement, but nobody has them.
budrichard Posted May 26, 2011 Share #3 Â Posted May 26, 2011 When fitting either diffuser, the flash settings are modified so I'm not certain how your exposure will be?-Dick
Gerard Posted May 26, 2011 Share #4 Â Posted May 26, 2011 You can tape a piece of toilet tissue in front of the flash.
cbretteville Posted May 26, 2011 Share #5 Â Posted May 26, 2011 A tip that was given to me a couple of years back was. take a sheet of all white Kleenex and peel off one layer. Take this layer and cut it down to fit the inside of the diffuser. So that is how I use mine now. In the wide angle diffuser I have the bit of Kleenex.I loose a little range, but I haven't felt it a hindrance. Â I'm guessing you can McGyver a diffuser using Kleenex and some plastic that you fasten (or use a bit of clingfilm) to the SF24. It will take away some of the harshness of direct flash without a diffuser. Â I did some quick tests using my M8 and a 21/2.8ZM (which should be about the same as a 28 on full frame) and the corner illumination is a lot better with a Kleenex/clingfilm 'diffuser' than without an diffuser at all. For a 12 you'd be looking at loss of corner illumination even with a diffuser, but the McGyver diffuser should be better than nothing. Â Good luck, Carl

Guest #12 Posted May 26, 2011 Share #8 Â Posted May 26, 2011 maybe try clear cellophane you can crinkle (candy wrapper, etc.). Â Or some white cardboard at 45 deg. to bounce light off low ceilings. Jaap made one of these out of white styrofoam a while back. Â I think the light is hard with and without the Leica diffuser, so maybe not a huge difference. jaapv Posted May 26, 2011 Share #10 Â Posted May 26, 2011 Sure, but a little hard to get while on vacation I'd think. true. In general, I find the Leica diffuser not very effective. SFILL or Kleenex or sticking on a polystyrene coffee cup works better.
brill64 Posted May 27, 2011 Share #11 Â Posted May 27, 2011 tissue or tracing paper cut to size, as many layers as you like to give your preferred effect and fixed with sellotape. coloured sweet wrappers give you a lomo effect

LuxBob Posted May 27, 2011 Share #13 Â Posted May 27, 2011 true. In general, I find the Leica diffuser not very effective. SFILL or Kleenex or sticking on a polystyrene coffee cup works better. Â I love improvisation, especially the coffee cup idea - it reminds me of Garry Fongs diffuser. Quite often I attach a piece of white card with elastic bands - works great but I have to try the coffee cup too..
budrichard Posted May 27, 2011 Share #14 Â Posted May 27, 2011 true. In general, I find the Leica diffuser not very effective. SFILL or Kleenex or sticking on a polystyrene coffee cup works better. Â The two attachments for the SF24D are not diffusers but depending on which one is installed, they either widen or decrease the angle of the flash.-Dick
