What is going on here?

I am going to Brazil soon but not sure about taking my M9 and lenses. Thinking of a smaller camera lead me to X1 or X100. So I went to the London Leica store with an SD card to try out the X1. The one with the Merc at f8, the other at f5.6. On the basis of these results, no thank you. Any idea what was wrong here? This was the display model in the store. Still searching for an X100 to try.

what focusing mode did you use? manual? AF? (which AF?) do you know if the firmware had been upgraded? i would try it again w/ 1Spot focus and multi metering

Taken off the shelf in the store, so I assumed it was set to AF but now that you mention it I wonder if it was on manual? Sun was so strong I could not see anything on the screen.

I,ve no idea "what is going on here" ... but can report that in the 5-6 weeks i have

been using one ive no results like this ... one thing springs to mind ... did you get

the green light and gave it enough time to focus .... V1 software needs time , im confident

you can appreciate that being an M9 user.

Hi, it’s been noted many times, the X1 is N O T a P&S..there is a learning curve..

If you are an experienced photographer you would/should at least have spent a little time getting to know even the basics of the X1..I doubt you could jump in & drive a Ferrari like an experienced Ferrari driver, it does N O T mean the Ferrari is at fault.. I spent a 10hour atlantic flight just studying the X1 manual..my first images proved the time was well spent..Try again “Jackson” the X1 will satisfy your photographic needs, you need to understand it’s mindset..

BillM82, I am simply amazed that you would base an important buying decision on such a perfunctory test. Did you allow no time to ask for a quick demonstration of the camera? Surely that would have highlighted the key settings. So the blame for the operating error lies entirely with you, I'm afraid.

Well Bill ... i for one do "not" wish to put you off the X1 ... its a very capable wee

camera and punches above its weight ... plus in the Leica digital world ... (not cheap)

represents good value for money ... please have another go :)

Well I was in a bit of a rush but did say that I wanted to take a few quick shots to look at the results on the card. I guess they should have reset the camera. My idea was to take a few shots with the X1 and then the X100 and compare. But I guess you cannot trust the store to reset, they just put it back on the shelf after the last guy.

Fair point, the Leica salesperson should have ensured that you left with decent examples. Not so much user error (as I said above), rather shoddy service.

While I agree to a point, I still fail to see how a quick test could be concluded without examining the LCD screen jpegs. Such out of focus results should have been immediately obvious to both salesman and customer! Perhaps this vital stage was omitted.

For basic research of your choices of camera, you only have to look at the gallery to see what the X1 is capable of, and dpreview's review of the X100 to see what thats like.

You should get images similar to their samples, if not, there is something wrong, in your case, as has been said before, the camera was probably on MF and you need to spend a little more time with it before making a decision.

I can crop to 100% any of my X1 images and they are sharp as sharp can be.

As an alternative, you might also like to consider the D-Lux 5.

Or maybe a box brownie, if you looked at the X1 as a serious

photographer the issue would not have arisen.

However good or bad the salesperson is/ was

I have always found that if one looks at Leicas it is assumed

you have a certain photographic knowledge and expertise.

Of course on the other hand this Post could have been put up by

a Troll!

Buy a Lomo, every image is different even with

the same settings! Ha@@y sna@@ing.
