Michael Hiles Posted May 24, 2011 Share #1 Posted May 24, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Montreal nestles around a modest mountain (Mount Royal). A feature of the city - for tourists at least - are the horse-drawn Calèches, and you can take a leisurely tour of the mountain park - created by Fredrick Law Olmstead who also did Central Park in NY. NZDavid Posted May 25, 2011 Share #5 Posted May 25, 2011 Could have been take a century ago... or last week. Those planners of times gone by were very forward thinking, creating a true asset for future generations. One place I haven't visited, but I hear good things. Michael Hiles Posted May 25, 2011 Author Share #6 Posted May 25, 2011 Thanks David - in fact this picture was taken back in my misspent youth. Mount Royal Park is jealously protected against developers and other would-be encroachers. It is a jewel. I see you are in Christchurch - I hope you were not a victim of the earthquakes... NZ is a target place to visit before I become breathless and horizontal.

Christchurch is a mess, but there's plenty to see around the rest of the country. A friend has some pictures and stories of kayaking Milford Sound - it is clear that NZ must be amongst the most beautiful places on earth. Beyond words. To others reading this - go to the NZ site noted above and look at the Gallery. You will be very happy that you did!

Michael Hiles Posted May 30, 2011 Author Share #12 Posted May 30, 2011 Thanks K-H, The spot is pretty much the same. This is a no-cars road around the mountain park in the center of Montreal, and the Calèches are a constant feature of a Montreal summer. One of the timeless aspects of a quite dynamic city. Thanks for noticing.

k-hawinkler Posted May 30, 2011 Share #15 Posted May 30, 2011 Michael, Thanks. I visited Montreal some thirty years ago for an IAU meeting and remember the visit fondly. To me Montreal looked like to offer a rich environment for photography. Best, K-H.
Michael Hiles Posted May 30, 2011 Author Share #16 Posted May 30, 2011 Thanks K-H, Glad you enjoyed yourself here. The city offers great picture opportunities. Parts of the city are quite old, and there is a plethora of reminders of its French origins. Until fairly recently it was Canada's largest city (that is now Toronto), and there is lots of evidence of a varied and rich history, and as Québec's metropolis, a promising future. Montreal is also a city of festivals, the best know being Le Festival de Jazz, which runs for about 10 days in late June - and is the largest of its kind in the world. It is a music fan's mecca, and the picture opportunities are endless. And the wonderful winter requires a whole other thread. I could go on... daveleo Posted May 31, 2011 Share #17 Posted May 31, 2011 This is too nice! What I esp like is the "unbalanced", top-heavy composition . . . most people might have cropped off the bottom a bit and that would ruin it. That effect (and the left wagon being so far left) adds a nice "edge" to this scene.
