stephen tidik Posted May 21, 2011 Share #1 Â Posted May 21, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) My M9 no longer completely turns on. Most of the time there is no function at all. Sometimes the LCD will work enough to tell me my base plate is off, but nothing else. I can't review photo, see menu, etc. Sometimes I can activate the shutter and see the red light in the view finder, but most of the time nothing. I've tried 3different batteries. No luck. Has anyone had a similar problem? I will likely send my camera to Leica on Monday, unless some has a better suggestion? Thank for your help.
Advertisement Posted May 21, 2011 Posted May 21, 2011 Hi stephen tidik, Take a look here M9 no longer functions. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
AGeoJO Posted May 21, 2011 Share #2 Â Posted May 21, 2011 That is disheartening and I am sorry to hear that. I would send that in, especially if it is still covered under warranty. Even if it is not, it won't do you much good the way it acts, I would send that in for repair, too.
ayewing Posted May 21, 2011 Share #3 Â Posted May 21, 2011 Just a thought - have you checked the small pin in the base of the camera that detects whether the baseplate is present or not. If it is stuck releasing it might help.
MarkP Posted May 22, 2011 Share #4 Â Posted May 22, 2011 Unfortunately, perhaps another negative for the Reliability poll? Â Sorry to hear about your problem. Â Mark
kaiwing Posted May 22, 2011 Share #5 Â Posted May 22, 2011 Your M9 seems on a "sleep" mode. I am afraid it is best to send it back for repair if you have replaced the battery or checked whether the bottom plate is secured.
Anasebi Posted May 22, 2011 Share #6 Â Posted May 22, 2011 Sorry to hear about it, sounds like the time my M9 ate its SD card. Know you've likely already checked it with another SD card but thats exactly the behaviour M9s have after the cards go bad.
jaapv Posted May 22, 2011 Share #7 Â Posted May 22, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sounds like the firmware got corrupted and the camera needs a hard reset. Only Leica can do that, as you seem to be past the point of deep battery drain.
stephen tidik Posted May 25, 2011 Author Share #8 Â Posted May 25, 2011 M9 now functioning. Thanks so much for everyone's help, esp Anasebi. I was on a trip to attend my daughter's graduation in Northern California with a new SanDisk 8GB card, 2 batteries, my M9 and one lens, when my camera would not function. I called my Leica dealer, and also stopped at a Leica dealer in Walnut Creek, both tried to help, but were told, that I would need to send the camera to Leica. When I returned home I tried a previously used SD card which worked fine, and today I bought some new SD cards which work. I find it difficult to believe that with a bad SD card virtually nothing works on the camera. The shutter, exposure meter, menu, iso, info, all do not work without a functioning SD card. adan Posted May 25, 2011 Share #9 Â Posted May 25, 2011 The camera does a "check" of the SD card when turned on (to set the available shots counter, primarily, but also to check that the card is correctly formatted for the M9). Â It is not so much that nothing else functions directly due to the bad card, but that a bad card can "hang" the startup sequence during the card check and leave the camera in limbo, never getting around to the shutter, meter, menus, etc. Â Ideally, one usually gets an "SD Card Error" message - but sometimes the error is just too extreme. Â BTW - MarkP - so we can now take this one OFF the M9 reliability poll? Hmmm?
250swb Posted May 25, 2011 Share #10 Â Posted May 25, 2011 Yes it would have been good if the camera could have given a 'bad SD card' message with its last dying breath, but its altogether another example of test all the easy things first, take nothing for granted. I wonder how many cameras have been sent to Leica for repair with what are ultimately simple problems. Â Glad you got it fixed Stephen. Hmmm? Hi Andy No that is a fault, on powering up the camera should display an ikon that says card problem please wait, if it does not go away you know there is a card problem. If you dont get Leica to do resonable ergonomics the camera will be more difficult to use. Noel
PBatemanJ Posted May 25, 2011 Share #15 Â Posted May 25, 2011 Good to hear the problem has solved. I remembered for my M9 or M8 (I do not remember) that it took unusually long time to start up and this slow down has gone once card was reformatted on computer then camera. vanhulsenbeek Posted May 31, 2011 Share #18 Â Posted May 31, 2011 My apology in advance if this is rather a basic question.... but could you please tell me how you format a memory card in a computer? Thanks. Â I do not want to spoil the fun, but any card should IMHO only be formatted "in camera" Â The most imported moment is its first time in the camera. Working with factory formatted cards without immediately formatting in the camera is to invite alll sorts of possible trouble, the first being to loose you numbering! Â When in a computer: use FAT32! And then: format again in the camera!
bybrett Posted May 31, 2011 Share #19 Â Posted May 31, 2011 I'm seeing SD Ultra cards freezing M9's time and time again. The cards have been changed and M9 does not like it.
