ryee3 Posted May 16, 2011 Share #1 Posted May 16, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Is Leica coming out with a R solution soon or should I buy a Canon Mark iv. I rather stay with a Leica solution but from a previous thread, the Mark iv look like a very good approach particularly for sports.
Advertisement Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 Hi ryee3, Take a look here To buy or not to buy that is the question?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted May 16, 2011 Share #2 Posted May 16, 2011 I would not hold my breath for the Leica solution - but I would prefer Nikon-Leitax.
Want-a-leica Posted May 17, 2011 Share #3 Posted May 17, 2011 Is Leica coming out with a R solution soon or should I buy a Canon Mark iv. I rather stay with a Leica solution but from a previous thread, the Mark iv look like a very good approach particularly for sports. Are you planning on shooting sports? Then it's a no-brainer, get the Canon. Does about a trillion FPS and has autofocus which is faster than Usain Bolt. You can shoot sports and action with a rangefinder (I've done it), but your timing has to be incredibly good because you can't blast off ten FPS, and the lack of really long lenses will be a major pain unless you can get really close and/or use a visoflex or something. spydrxx Posted May 17, 2011 Share #4 Posted May 17, 2011 I think I'd forget about the Leica R solution. If you want to use R lenses on a digital camera there are several options, the Leitax conversion, the DMR (forget future support), camera body conversions (such as Sigma via the Sigmacumlaude Co.), and finally adapters - notably to the Canon line. Then there's the whole micro 4/3 lines of cameras with adapters for everything.
k_g_wolf ✝ Posted May 17, 2011 Share #5 Posted May 17, 2011 There will be something digital by LEICA for R- users, one day. Be patient. Best GEORG

Best GEORG Alternatively, you could buy something now (I'm with the Nikon/Leitax camp) and enjoy that while you are waiting... which might be a very long time... and not what you were expecting... Posto 6 Posted May 18, 2011 Share #7 Posted May 18, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) If you want full functionality from the lens, and still might use film as well, there is only one choice- the DMR. These should get cheaper now that Leica no longer effectively support them, but give a far more pleasant experience than the other alternatives above. As well, of course, as wonderful files and the excellent R8/R9 viewfinder! Take the plunge- if you don't like it, it should be quite easy to sell and not really be out of pocket. Xmas Posted May 18, 2011 Share #8 Posted May 18, 2011 Hi The DMR is a resonable choice as you can swap between film and digital by swapping the back or getting a 2nd body, e.g. if the sceane is too contrasty. If the DMR fails you can use film until you get a replacement. Frequently with a Nikon or Canon DSLR it will be economic to get a replacement, rather than a repair. This is dependent on access to a good C41 lab, or home processing. If you decide to get out of the R range the DMR back should hold its price if it is still operational. If you like the DMR images and the R I'd stay with it. Noel
jaapv Posted May 18, 2011 Share #9 Posted May 18, 2011 I would not recommend taking an DMR apart and rebuilding it during a shoot if you want switch between digital and film. Picking up another R camera is about 0.5% of the effort needed.
