sparkie Posted February 2, 2007 Share #1 Posted February 2, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Ok ok this has been asked before but it seems the newer 50/2.8 elmar collapsibles can be collapsed into the M8 without hitting the shutter inside.. http://www.leica-camera-user.com/digital-forum/15221-extremely-fast-lens.html can anyone else confirm this? -- so does that mean the older vintage 50/2.8 elmars protrude more into the cavity? Advertisement Posted February 2, 2007 Posted February 2, 2007 Hi sparkie, Take a look here Modern 50/2.8 elmar collapsible on M8 ?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
4season Posted February 2, 2007 Share #2 Posted February 2, 2007 Mine hits the walls of the camera's interior long before the lens is fully collapsed, but it's a few years old, so who knows if Leica has made some changes with the newer production. sparkie Posted February 3, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted February 3, 2007 is your 50/2.8 elmar a vintage version or a newer type elmar. what is the lenght of the protrusion of your lens when in the collapsed position?
htroom Posted February 3, 2007 Share #4 Posted February 3, 2007 I think my Elmar is a newer one (2 YeaRs old). I measured the smalest amount of the M8 opening (bottom-top), it's 31 mm. The diameter of my Elmar tubus is 30 mm. So that's why it's difficult to mount the Elmar with collapsed tubus, but if i mount the Elmar with extended tubus it's possible to collapse the Elmar when it's mounted even there is only a half mm on each side. The smalest amount of the M7 opening (bottom-top) is 34 mm. Greetings Jörg
sparkie Posted February 3, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted February 3, 2007 Jörg, can you tell me what is the lenght of the collapsed part of your elmar lens from its lens mount?
carstenw Posted February 3, 2007 Share #6 Posted February 3, 2007 There were only two 50mm f/2.8 lenses made, they are both collapsible, and the last serial number which belongs to the old series is 2503100.
lct Posted February 3, 2007 Share #7 Posted February 3, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) There were only two 50mm f/2.8 lenses made, they are both collapsible... Three with the tabbed M6J's. Protrusion length is not the same either (2004 left, 1962 right). Current ones (1994 with a piece of strap here) do touch something in the R-D1. Didn't test them without protection on the M8 sorry.
carstenw Posted February 3, 2007 Share #8 Posted February 3, 2007 What is the tabbed M6J version? The Leica Pocket Guide mentions only two, the ELMOO/ELMOM version (screw mount: 11512, 11012 / bayonet: 11612, 11112), which looks like what you have here, and the new one. I presume that the black lens and the lens in the second picture are the same lens, just the black modern and chrome retro constructions? lct Posted February 3, 2007 Share #9 Posted February 3, 2007 What is the tabbed M6J version?... The tabbed modern 50/2.8 was sold with the M6J in 1994. You can view it in the second pic above (with a 40/2 hood). Also here with original hood on the M6J:
Leicaiste Posted February 3, 2007 Share #10 Posted February 3, 2007 Here is the M6J version: http://www.cameraquest.com/leicam6j.htm
sparkie Posted February 3, 2007 Author Share #11 Posted February 3, 2007 so if the M6J 50/2.8 is the same length as the current 50/2.8 -- then it should fit and collapse into the M8 also(?) looking at the pics posted the vintage version protrudes less, so that should fit also unless there were diameter differences between the various versions and designs
lct Posted February 3, 2007 Share #12 Posted February 3, 2007 so if the M6J 50/2.8 is the same length as the current 50/2.8 -- then it should fit and collapse into the M8 also(?)... The two 'modern' 50/2.8 (M6J's and current version) are the same protrusion length which is longer than the 'vintage' one. Both 'modern' need protection with the R-D1. With the M8 i did not remove the straps so i don't know.
sparkie Posted February 3, 2007 Author Share #13 Posted February 3, 2007 based on the photo posted by Jörg it shows a modern/current elmar mounted and collapsed into the M8. So presumably the M6J version should fit and so too should the shorter vintage version assuming all other variables being equal such as diameter widths.. can ony one confirm this
chrism Posted February 3, 2007 Share #14 Posted February 3, 2007 Since this is an f2.8 lens why is it called an Elmar, and not an Elmarit? I thought Elmars were f4. Chris
carstenw Posted February 3, 2007 Share #15 Posted February 3, 2007 Chris, there are some inconsistencies in the naming, mostly for historical reasons. The names weren't always as logical as they are now. I think the Elmar 50 is the last oddly named lens in the lineup.
rebride Posted February 3, 2007 Share #16 Posted February 3, 2007 I was offerred the latest model (sorry, I don't know the serial number), brand new in a box, and shot a few pictures. Beautiful lens, but too small for my fingers so I returned it. In answer to your question - it fitted well. Dejan

rebride Posted February 3, 2007 Share #18 Posted February 3, 2007 Yes, on the M8. Sorry for not being able to give more data about the lens. Dejan
carstenw Posted February 3, 2007 Share #19 Posted February 3, 2007 When you say that it fit well, then you mean that it was also possible to collapse it fully?
cbretteville Posted February 3, 2007 Share #20 Posted February 3, 2007 Carsten, I beleive we have, thanks to LCT, found the mysterious lens #11824 that Leica listst in the M8 firmware. You've got it in parantheses in your list under 50 2.8. It must be this M6J tabbed version. - C
