"free" IR Filter delivery + issues with B&W 486 pro on 50 lux pre-asph

1/ the "free" filters

I know I'm one of many with the same problem, but I'd appreciate it if anyone's got an inside track on when Leica will be sending out the free filters we've all ordered. I'm much happier with the results I get with the two that I've got up and running (on 50lux and 21 elmarit), and I've got some jobs coming up where I'd like to use the M ... Good if I had a firmer idea of when these were coming through (along with those back ordered at fotohuppert.

2/ using the lenshood + B&W 486 pro on 50 lux pre-asph

For years I've kept a Uv filter on my early 50 lux. It's an original Leica with the slim mount. Getting the clip on filter on and off was fine as the little clips engaged in the right slot and all was well. With the B&W that I've now got in place, this doesn't work as the front of the pair of clips hits the metal of the filter ring, so the lens hood is not seated in properly. QUESTION - does anyone have any experience of swapping glass between filter rings? If yes, I'd be really grateful for any advice. What tools? What sequence?

Thanks

Chris

For what it's worth, I asked the MD of Leica UK about the filters before Christmas. He wrote back stating that the filters wouldn't be ready until March (I assumed he meant 2007!).

As far as swapping filter glass goes, I'd have thought that this is difficult to do without damaging the glass coatings. Perhaps it'd be easier for you to change hoods and maybe use one of those metal screw-in hoods that you can get cheaply on eBay?

Yes, or at least I've reversed the glass in two of my B+W 486 filters. They had the IR reflective coating on the outside instead of the MRC coating.

Here's how you get the glass out, there is a slight risk of cracking the glass due to the heat which may have to be applied.

First you need a sheet of rubber about 6 inches square or a piece of leather which has a rough unglazed side. Place this on a flat surface, for the leather place rough side up. Now press the back of the filter (which has the threaded retaining ring) onto the rubber/leather and while maintaining the pressure turn the filter. The ring should unscrew.

If this doesn't work place the filter front downwards on a hot stove and remove when the rim is almost too hot to hold. This heats up the outer ring. Now quickly try to remove the retaining ring as before. Don't wait any longer since you want the outer rim to expand more than the retaining ring. If they both reach the same temperature you won't have the differential expansion.

When you come to reassemble the filter let everything cool down first. You can do up the retaining ring by pressing down on the rubber/leather till it's finger tight. Then if you want to, heat the filter front down and quickly tighten it a bit more.

Dear Bob - thanks for this. I'll have to see how brave I'm feeling! As I leave the hood on all the time, the earlier comment about backing it off and then re-tightening when the hood's in place may be the answer.

Thanks to all for replies...

Best

Are you sure on that date, John? The email I got just said "Feb. 07". At first I thought it meant Feb 7th myself, but after thinking about Leica is with delivery dates, I am now assuming it will be nearer the end of February before we see them. Not trying to sound pessimistic here, just hoping that I am wrong and we see the filters earlier.

When I registered and ordered my filters it said they would ship February 7, 2007.

I got the same information, but it would be helpful if Leica could confirm (or give advance notice that there'll be a delay). It's the same with airlines and Virgin Rail (UK readers will know what I mean...) Better to know that there's going to be a delay and be given a realistic (though distant) date so that they can then pleasantly surprise. Under promise, over deliver. Would that this little mantra had been followed in Solms over the last couple of months.

I've NO complaints re the M8 as a tool - I love it. I'd just like Leica to be as outstandingly good in its communications with customers. It's better than many I acknowledge - but why not be as good as your glass?!

Best
