Fake - scam - ridiculous?

Recommended Posts

Steve,

... it's Gumtree. Be very careful when purchasing anything from this site, which is well known as a haven for scammers and fraudsters.

On the other hand I bought a 35 Summicron v4 quite cheaply by being careful and only directly exchanging cash for lens in a fairly busy public location with a friend 'riding shotgun'.

One of the favourite scams is to lure an unsuspecting buyer to a meeting to buy expensive merchandise at a knock-off price and then relieve him of the cash that the so-called seller knows the buyer will bring to the meeting.

The descriptions and details are often poor and I've had some amusement in the past asking questions that reveal a scam. One seller advertised an original 1956 Leica MP for around £1,000 with no pictures. I asked if I could see the camera and he replied that he'd had to move to Glasgow because his mother had fallen ill (*might* have been true ) but he would send the camera as soon as I'd paid.

I asked if the autofocus was working okay because 1956 MP's commonly had problems with autofocus and he emailed me back to say that the autofocus was working just fine and he'd tested it the week before. I emailed him back to say that I was happy with the purchase price and would be travelling to Glasgow at the weekend and if he would meet me at 173 Pitt Street I would pay him in cash. Regrettably he never emailed me back. 173 Pitt Street is the address of Glasgow Central Police Station.:p

Pete.
