canetsbe Posted May 2, 2011 Share #1 Â Posted May 2, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hey guys, Â Just a quick question- when the IS is turned on, do you hear two shutter clicks or one? Isn't the IS supposed to sort of "superimpose" two shots into one to correct for motion blur when shooting less than 1/30 second? Mine only clicks once. pgeobc Posted May 3, 2011 Share #2 Â Posted May 3, 2011 Per the instruction manual: the camera takes two pictures when in IS mode. However, IS mode only works at slow shutter speeds, it says.

canetsbe Posted May 3, 2011 Author Share #4 Â Posted May 3, 2011 Seems it'll be going to Allendale along with my M8. I guess I'm going to be *forced* to shoot film only for a while
wda Posted May 3, 2011 Share #5 Â Posted May 3, 2011 canetsbe, don't be too hasty in assuming your X1 has a problem. Unless your settings and light level demand an exposure of 1/30th second or longer at f/2.8, IS will not operate, even if selected in the menu. When it does, the sound difference is virtually mperceptible to me. Â Although it is a simple solution to reduce camera shake (not subject movement), it is quite effective in extreme situations. Clearly a tripod is better.
Guest badbob Posted May 3, 2011 Share #6 Â Posted May 3, 2011 I did extensive tests of IS, and while the average shot at 1/30 second had a 30 to 40 percent chance of looking "sharper" in normal view (not 100 percent), when you do look at 100 percent, you can see that images taken with IS turned on are slightly more blurry than images taken with IS turned off. The camera just can't register those two shots perfectly. I have found, despite the inconvenience of extra frames to look at, that I get much better results with low shutter speeds when I shoot 5 or 6 shot bursts in burst mode. I really think it just doesn't work on my camera.

I really think it just doesn't work on my camera. Â Simple test: Indoor shots, using target with extreme detail. In my case I used a chair with a woven pattern on the back. Hold camera in hands, but rest arms on table or firm surface so you have minimal shake. Set shutter to 1/30 second. Take a dozen shots with IS set to on, then another dozen set to off. Examine all images at 100 percent. You should see the differences.
rfloyd Posted May 31, 2011 Share #9  Posted May 31, 2011 Hey guys, Just a quick question- when the IS is turned on, do you hear two shutter clicks or one? Mine only clicks once.  -Cole IS works only when using jpeg without the dng. And only between 1/4 to 1/30 of a second. The IS will then appear on the screen before you shoot and at review per click on INFO. You will here two clicks when you shoot if set at 1/4 or 1/8 of a second, but only one click at 1/15 or 1/30 of a second. If you hold down the info button the screen will always show the IS as on if you have it set even though it is not operable due to shutter being higher or lower than the 1/15-1/30 speed or even in dng. ezc203 Posted May 31, 2011 Share #10 Â Posted May 31, 2011 Pretty sure IS works in DNG + JPEG mode too.
