Advertisement Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 Hi petert531, Take a look here Afroditi. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stuny Posted February 1, 2007 Share #2 Posted February 1, 2007 Peter - A gorgeous, varied series, with the strength of being able to get the variations in look. The lighting and poses work exceptionally well and natural seeming (nothing terribly forced this time, and 5 has an interesting playful look that is slightly forced) with all but #3. 3 succeeds in showing another look, but it falls short in two areas. The first is the makeup artist should have stayed around to "erase" the rashes or abrasions on the model's torso. The second is hard to describe. Maybe this will do -- Though it succeeds in a casual, perhaps just woke up look, somehow it also says to me "slovenly". Perhaps is the jacket wore ironed? petert531 Posted February 1, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted February 1, 2007 I never bother with asking artists to do that...I can fix it in PS so much faster...this is normal of bruises etc. Hmmm. I will look at the jacket. As a fake stylist I don't iron or steam clothes. These were taken out of the shopping bag and just shot. I am attaching another few red jacket ones from the series. stuny Posted February 1, 2007 Share #4 Posted February 1, 2007 Peter - These overcome the feeling of "slovenly", probably because the hair is less in her face and you've pulled back on both, making her less in our faces. A beautiful model who seems good at posing.
petert531 Posted February 1, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted February 1, 2007 It was a pretty pleasant shoot and I am happy with the results. I liked the way the hair sat on the orginal one I posted. When you shake you head with a fan, the results are a little random...one reason to shoot digital instead of film. I went through 350 last night to get 65 selects. Of course there are many good ones, but similar, of course. Peter
stuny Posted February 1, 2007 Share #6 Posted February 1, 2007 I probably have the spelling wrong, but the green dress looks like London designer Karen Milne's. Is your wardrobe in one size, and therefore you need to specify size when you book models? There seems little shortage of good models in Toronto, Scarberia, and places in between. petert531 Posted February 2, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted February 2, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Red Dress is from Bananna Republic, most other apparel from H&M...I am a CHEAP stylist, but you still end up laying down hundreds....as for size, usually size 4, somtimes 6. Affroditi was actually a size 2...and I have seen size 0 at 5 10. That IS scary. That is fashoin model size though, 4. Little lattitude unless you are somehow exceptional. Jamie Roberts Posted February 2, 2007 Share #8 Posted February 2, 2007 Lots of playing with lights...No touchups, fresh off the sensor last night....It's amazing how lighting influences the feeling. Honestly it never ceases to amaze me.Peter Peter--a great series, and I have nothing to add to the comments, except that I share your enthusiasm for playing with light! One question... when you say "fresh off the sensor" do you mean DMR or M8? Just curious!
petert531 Posted February 2, 2007 Author Share #9 Posted February 2, 2007 Sadly I shoot a 'full frame sensor' using my Summicrons....I hope the R10 will be out soon... I couldn't justify the cost of a DMR and maybe have to send my R8 out for electronics upgrade when I got a used 'box' for less than half the price of a DMR from a friend. I am a maniac, but far from rich. Indeed I had to stop shooting film because I was going broke doing so.... I used a comptitor's 35 lens (no names) from the Body maker (hey the plastic lens is only a couple of hundred )on a back lit situation, and the flare was unmanagable. I can't wait to use a leica lens on a leica body Peter
Sanjuro Posted February 2, 2007 Share #10 Posted February 2, 2007 You shoot wonderful photos - regardless of the camera.
robsteve Posted February 2, 2007 Share #11 Posted February 2, 2007 Peter: Now will be the time to get a DMR, while there is uncertainty about a R10. You are also lucky to live in Toronto near one of the best Leica service depots in the world, Kindermann. They are the authorized Leica service in Canada and if you R8 had problems with a DMR, I am sure Leica would allow them to update it gratis. The DMR would allow much more range in the image than the Canon. It will hold highlights while still giving a large range and deep blacks. I have been watching your work on this forum and I find a lot of the exposures a bit dark and without life to the color. Originally I thought it might have been the pictures were posted in Adobe RGB, but this was not the case. You may want to look into your process for posting to the web to see if you can put a little more zip in the images. I don't think it is all the fault of your capture meduim, but something in the workflow to web. Originally I thought you were in Eastern Europe by all the names of the models, then I was surprised when you said you were in Toronto.
Jamie Roberts Posted February 2, 2007 Share #12 Posted February 2, 2007 Sadly I shoot a 'full frame sensor' using my Summicrons....I hope the R10 will be out soon... I can't wait to use a leica lens on a leica body Peter Peter--I hear you loud and clear on the "sensor". I actually got into my current Leica digitals because of the lenses; I used them on a 1ds2 for a long time before selling it and going with the DMR / M8 route. I still have a 5d too. But it gets matched up with Leica stuff--precisely because even the good lenses from um, you know, perform miserably in difficult light, especially backlight, and it's not just flare! Good to see you're in Toronto. Rob is exactly right about Kindermann; they're fabulous. 2 days after leasing my R9/DMR, a bad arca plate mismatch (don't ask) sent it slowly slipping off the tripod mount and onto the floor along with my 35 R summicron. I was at the model end and couldn't save it from crashing. Kindermann did all the mechanical work on both lens and body; Leica NJ worked over the DMR to make sure it was A-OK. Both were back to me within a week. As good--or better, given that Kindermann fixed the lens hood for free--than CPS in TO...
palmskov Posted February 2, 2007 Share #13 Posted February 2, 2007 Isn't it all about lightning;) Just kidding. Correct me if I'm wrong but moving the light by 1/4 will increse/decrease by a 1/2 factor? Really nice model and some nice shot. I really like number 1. And for sure it's really nice and inspiring and reassuring to be able to just take the photo directly from camera without postproduction... robert_parker Posted February 2, 2007 Share #14 Posted February 2, 2007 Peter #1, 4 and 5 work very well for me - one comment I would make about #1 is that I find the floor slightly distracting and would have put something on the floor to leave simple reds and greys #4 is ismple, well lit to my eye and heugely evocative and #5 wins for interest. squanmis Posted February 3, 2007 Share #15 Posted February 3, 2007 Wonderful series. I like #3 especially. Thanks for sharing. John
petert531 Posted February 3, 2007 Author Share #16 Posted February 3, 2007 Thanks everyone. I had a good shoot last night, but I was frustrated as I really tried something special and fell short. 5 lights was too much for me to figure out. I will post when I have a chance...I am off to another shoot this aft...it will be pretty commercial. Unlike some of those great photojournalistic shots I saw from Pakistan (just beautiful stuff, very inspiring) I have to 'make' the image. This depends on a team and then I have to see the image and as my friend says caputure the image. Moving up levels is slow and I am inpatient. I thank everyone for their input and support, means a lot to an amateur fishing in 'professional waters'. I am just a goldfish in the sharktank for sure.
