jmahto Posted March 5, 2016 Share #4043 Â Posted March 5, 2016 At the risk of being premature (WAR should acknowledge the correctness of Jayant's response), could Jayant's contribution be the Golden Gate Bridge? Correct. Part of San Francisco is on the right side of the bridge and the island of Alcatraz in the middle of the bay. Â It always intrigues me that many earlier explorers (like Drake) missed the tiny opening to the bay (bridged by GG bridge now) and failed to see a natural harbor inside for over 200 years. This is because it is very difficult to notice the tiny gap most of the time covered in fog from the sea. Â Had early British explorers discovered it first then the history of US west coast would have been very different. Â Nice link below for history buffs. http://foundsf.org/index.php?title=The_Discovery_of_San_Francisco_Bay_(1542-1769)
