The stuff from this plant is between the rice and the fish or just on the side, if with sashimi ... here is what mighty wiki has to say: "The unique flavor of xxxxx is a result of complex chemical mixtures from the broken cells of the rhizome, including those resulting from the hydrolysis of thioglucosides into glucose and methylthioalkyl" if it helps ... The only thing that I can think of that might accompany sush & sashimi in the manner that you describe that might be "crushed" would be wasabi. If wasabi is a rhizome: Might this be Estonian wasabi?
