rondeb Posted January 31, 2007 Share #1 Posted January 31, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I know that the "bags for the M8" issue has been covered here, but, anyone care to comment on this bag? I took a look at it at BH and it was very nice. I think I'm torn between the A&A Oskar bag, the Billingham, and my good old Domke. Thanks for the help. Advertisement Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Hi rondeb, Take a look here Leica - Billingham Combination Bag. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
glennedens Posted January 31, 2007 Share #2 Posted January 31, 2007 The Billingham Combi bag is well built, looks like it will last, i have one and have used it since November. it is a bit small, just a slight increase in size would make it more useful. I can carry the M8 body with or without a lens laying down accross the top with the lens facing down, it is a tad more exposed than i would prefer but is very compact. I place a lens or two in each pocket to the sides and the flaps fold down over the lenses when the camera is placed above. Several small accessories can be carried in the middle area under the camera body like the old style 21/24/28 finder or a small lens like the 28/2.8 ASPH. My bag is packed with the M8, 21/2.8, 28/2.8, 50/1.4 and 75/2. The outer pocket holds two batteries, SF24D, 1.25 Mag, SD cards, some filters, etc. The Billingham design of the straps and posts are a bit harder to open and close then some of my other bags but all of my Billingham bags have lasted forever. Last November I used this set up on a long trip to the Southwest including shooting at Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend and it was very workable while hiking and shooting. I do miss the old Leica Large Leather Combi M bag from the 1980's. Recently I found a used Leica Small Leather Combi M bag at Popflash and while it is tight the M8 will fit with strap and 21/2.8 lens attached into the form fitted M body slot of the case. There is still room for two additional lenses and other accessories. It makes for a very compact travel package. I have not seen the Oskar bag and the Domke bags have never really grabbed me but they are also well made and popular. Glenn
tom0511 Posted January 31, 2007 Share #3 Posted January 31, 2007 When you position a Leica M in a bag like this the finder-glass will lay on the pad all the time. Dont you think thatif you walk a lot with such bag, producing slight movement, it could scratch the viewfinder (camera front side)?
rondeb Posted January 31, 2007 Author Share #4 Posted January 31, 2007 Thanks for your throrough input Glenn. I noticed that the Billingham was a little difficult to open also, but it sounds like it's worked well for you. I think I'm going to take a walk down to PhotoVillage to check out the Oskar's day bag in person and go from there. All the best, Ron
wattsy Posted January 31, 2007 Share #5 Posted January 31, 2007 When you position a Leica M in a bag like this the finder-glass will lay on the pad all the time. Dont you think that if you walk a lot with such bag, producing slight movement, it could scratch the viewfinder (camera front side)? I doubt it. The glass is very hard and the inside of the smaller Billingham bags are lined with a soft felt material. I've owned M cameras for years and am forever polishing fingerprints off the front viewfinder window. The glass always looks like new.
glennedens Posted February 2, 2007 Share #6 Posted February 2, 2007 I was concerned about that but it was never a problem with my Contax G2 which used a similar bag format. In three months of use my biggest issue is fingerprints and smudges as already pointed out on this thread. So 3 months now and no scratches. The bigger worry is that the body is a little thick for the space provided by the Billingham bag in that upper area, so i am very careful with the top of the bag since the LCD would get hit first, there is a cover flap of the same material and thickness of the rest of the inner lining. Chrome M8 now on it's way back to Solms, sigh...... Glenn
