gdb Posted January 30, 2007 Share #1 Posted January 30, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) The idea is certainly not new. But what is the "state of the art" for getting autofocus through moving the sensor back and forth instead of modifying the lenses? The lens could be set to infinity, and the camera would focus by that mean. Of course, since some lenses focus beyond infinity, there could be some issues. What is the opinion or experience for the Forum members? Maybe this topic has already been discussed... Cheers Gérard

jaapv Posted January 30, 2007 Share #2 Posted January 30, 2007 Depending on focal length it would have to move forward and backward by at least 1 cm, making the camera-body thicker by 1cm....
rvaubel Posted January 30, 2007 Share #3 Posted January 30, 2007 Depending on focal length it would have to move forward and backward by at least 1 cm, making the camera-body thicker by 1cm.... What about if the coarse focus was done manually? The autofocus would just be used for fine focus (optionally) Rex
pascal_meheut Posted January 30, 2007 Share #4 Posted January 30, 2007 Contaxt did such a body. Not really a success.
Riley Posted January 30, 2007 Share #5 Posted January 30, 2007 would require some masterful machining to keep the sensor level the margin must be very very tight and it would be susceptible to shock if you could manage that and the connections to the sensor from the main board reliably i believe you could make it work
4season Posted January 30, 2007 Share #6 Posted January 30, 2007 The one and only time it was used in an SLR was, if I recall, the Contax AX: Contax AX Review Personally, I don't like autofocus very much, and would not relish the thought of seeing it incorporated into an M or R camera. mike prevette Posted January 30, 2007 Share #7 Posted January 30, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) The tollerances needed would exceed that of highend CNC machines, or the NASA space shuttle. Making repeatable motion control moves like that, in a small robust package is damn near impossible.
barjohn Posted January 30, 2007 Share #8 Posted January 30, 2007 Perhaps a better idea is to have a focusing sensor that reads a part of the image on the shutter and gives you an indication of when the image is in focus by lighting a green dot LED. You could then manually focus and tell if you were on in low light. If it had an external led indicator on the top too, you could focus with the camera at your waist without ever putting it to your eye for those discrete shots! Thoughts?
