photolandscape Posted January 30, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted January 30, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I sent my M8 to Allendale per Leica's directions on 1/2/07. They looked it over and determined it needed to go back to Solms, and sent it over on 1/10/07. Â Today, for the first time, when I log into the service tracking system in Solms, it recognizes my serial number. The message reads "Service Order Registered On 1/29/07". Â I'm hoping someone who's gone through this may know how to interpret the message--it sounds to me like a) they just logged it in, but nothing further is happening at the moment, or they have logged it in and it's being worked on (hopefully this is the case). Â Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I have a paying assignment in Las Vegas starting 2/10 and need the M8 to do it, so things are getting tight. Advertisement Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Hi photolandscape, Take a look here Solms Service Tracking Question. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
marknorton Posted January 30, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted January 30, 2007 Yes, it will say "In Repair" when it's in the queue to be fixed and "Repair Complete - Shipping in Progress" when the repair is done. I think 2/10 is going to be tight.
wattsy Posted January 30, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted January 30, 2007 I think you should assume that it won't be back in your hands by February 10th. The turnaround time from when Solms had my M8 in their hands to getting it back to me (in the UK) was around 2 weeks. In the US you will also have the customs clearance time to factor in. grober Posted January 30, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted January 30, 2007 You need to plan six weeks at a minimum. Â My M8-to-Solms-and-return experience: six weeks. I sent it from the left coast of the USA to New Jersey (2-day air) on 1 December and received it back in my hands on 18 January. Everything seems to work as it should. Â The Leica website tracking thingy never showed me a thing whilst they had my camera in their hands. Â You can imagine our state of mind, just before Christmas, when we paid Visa for this November purchase with the camera 6000 miles away at the factory! Â If you are a professional, call the professional services contact on the Leica web site and ask to borrow a M8 for your shoot in Las Vegas.

I wish Leica UK had the equivalent. (I spoke to somebody before Christmas who was meant to be the contact for professional users. It was like talking to a junior salesperson at Jessops.) I think 2/10 is going to be tight.  Thanks Mark. I checked again today and I've moved up to the "In Repair" stage, so progress is being made. I imagine they have technicians in Solms who specialize in certain repairs--one person might do rangefinders, another electronics, and so on. But I hope when they pick mine up that they fix the three problems in quick succession and pack it up and send it on its way. That would be nice. It's been a long 28 days since I sent it off, after only having taken a couple hundred shots in Seattle.  My fingers are crossed for a speedy return.
