(Wistful) Assessment of M8

I have been using this, wonderful M8 for 46 days and 20 hours now, but who's counting. My photography improves with every use of the camera; pretty soon I'll be able to use the thing. :)

Yesterday, I was speaking to a friend who will soon be taking an M8 to Antarctica, and he mentioned that he is losing sleep in anticipation of this event. I responded that I haven't been sleeping well since December. I spend part of each night thinking about a shoot that is scheduled or something that I want to do with the camera (and doing my best not to wake the bride).

The detail from this camera is astonishing and I continue to be amazed at the luminance in the shadow areas. I don't know how Leica does this latter trick.

I am so pleased to be using my Leica lenses again and enjoying their resolving power and "roundness" of image all over again. I am shooting more and enjoying it even more. It's a good thing I don't have a girlfriend because I'd be ignoring her (and the bride would be PO'd). Call me chimpy.

I miss the sound and feel of the M4 and M6 shutters, however (expecially the 4!). I have used M's, exclusively, for almost 40 years, and used to get a buzz just holding those cameras. I think, therefore, that I have finally found a use for an iPod: to record the sound of the shutter and listen to it while I take pictures. Now, what to do about the feel of the curtain movement? :)

Addictively yours,

Well, I have no suggestion for your shutter laments, other than to echo them. My M6 has a nicer sound to the shutter. Still, I also appreciate the M8 more and more each day, and am slowly coming to grips with the differences from SLRs. Everyone I have shown the camera to has been totally charmed with it. Friends who could not manually focus my 5D with Ee-S and Leica lenses find the M8 no problem. When I go out with friends, I often just put the camera on the table within easy reach, and people snap nice shots of each other from time to time. Fun.

Surely a recipe for disaster, if your friends are anything like mine:D there is no way I would allow my camera be passed around my ham-fisted bunch, how could you explain after an accident with shards of glass and metal on the tiled floor "well the lens costs €x,000's and the body is €4,000, but who's counting, sure were amongst friends":o :o

Yeah, Bill, but many of us don't sympathize with your missing the M4/6 shutter sounds, because we don't have our M8's yet!!!

(Mine comes next week)

Man, what a tough guy!

All kidding aside, I'll pick up your M8 and bring it to you. Send the tickets to my house.

Even more kidding aside. You're gonna love it! You told me you have your filters. When you get your camera, see if you start losing sleep, too.

Best,

I guess, since the mechanism needs to be exercised now and then, I'll have to set up a maintenance program where I take the M4 and M6 out for a listen every few months.

crank. chunk. crank. chunk. (that's the 4)

whirr. chunk; whirr. chunk; whirr. (that the 6 with the motor drive)

Thanks Bill for the update. It's great to get periodic updates from people who have used the M8 over (longer and longer) periods of time. Is your friend at all worried about the camera having technical problems while in Antarctica? Is he/she bringing a back-up? I'm awaiting Sean Reid's poll results, but I think I'd be cautious at this point. (Not trying to sound alarmist, just practical.)

your writing is very good! Quite poetic...

And yes, I agree the M8 is addictive. Luckily my wife is also preoccupied with her own things, if not, she would have sold my new camera already...

As for the sound, I fell in love with it the moment I heard it, but than again, I come from a Contax G2 :D

Cheers,

Peter
