M8 metering mode not like R9 how come?

I was just having a squiz through the M8 instructions over at Leica camera dot com.

Page 104 of the user manual describes the metering mode, which seems to cover larger than spot.

I thought, and I gathered pundits expected similar metering modes to the R9, with spot, centre weighted, and average modes. There is probably a reason, like size limitations, that M8 doesnt carry these modes. Can someone tell me why?

Thanks

The R9 has a secondary mirror behind the patially silvered main mirrror. This second mirror directs the scene image to the matrix metering cells. In the case of the M, there is no mirror, so the cell reads the light reflected off the grey band on the shutter. This reflective metering is probably not accurate for matrix metering. One of the selling points of the Leica metering in the SLRs, starting with the SL was this secondary mirror directed the focused light to the metering cells. Other SLRs are using sensors in the pentaprisms, but the light is not in focus at this point.

M6, M6TTL, M7 all have a circular white spot painted on the black fabric shutter curtain.

M8 has a white blade in the metal shutter curtain.

In both cases, light reflected from the shutter is read by the metering system.

Blade and spot are different shapes. Therefore M8 has a different metering pattern.
