sdai Posted January 29, 2007 Share #21  Posted January 29, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I agree with Guy, if you can share the DNG file with us ... lots of people can come up with better suggestions. Basically the color temperature in this picture is wrong.  I tried to save the JPEG as NEF and make the adjustment in RAW ... here's what I came up with and I prefer much less saturation. Advertisement Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 Hi sdai, Take a look here How to make this photo better?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
mwilliamsphotography Posted January 29, 2007 Share #22  Posted January 29, 2007 The images are underexposed, and posted on the web as Adobe RGB 1998 instead of SRGB color space which goofs up the color even more when viewed on screen.  Try increasing the exposure and add a "cooling filter (82) in Photoshop "Filters" ... then adjust to taste.  Post as sRGB for web viewing. Jamie Roberts Posted January 29, 2007 Share #23 Â Posted January 29, 2007 Simon-- Â Yes...it's more neutral... but it doesn't look like sunset anymore! Â This is the problem with grey cards... sometimes you don't want to white balance (I can't believe I'm saying this, but it's true). At sunrise, at sunset, the light is not white; for sunset there should be a lot of red, and not so much blue in the sky either! Â I agree Guy here too--let's get the RAW file and see how everyone does with it! It's a great image; I'd love to take a shot at making it look like sunset! Â EDIT: I just saw Marc's excellent version! That's looking like evening light to me
sdai Posted January 29, 2007 Share #24  Posted January 29, 2007 Simon-- Yes...it's more neutral... but it doesn't look like sunset anymore!  Sorry about that, Jamie ... seemed I've skipped the most important part.  How about this? ... the sky shows some posterization due to over processing with the JPEG. I downloaded the image, processed it and now I can't attach it because it is oversized. Tnx  Bill, when you post to a thread, there's a "Manage Attachment" section in the "Addition Options" area where you can upload your images. When it complains about oversize, just save it at lower quality in Photoshop and the size will be shrunk.
colorflow Posted January 29, 2007 Author Share #27  Posted January 29, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Alan if this is a DNG file , could you send it to yourself using YouSendIt: The Leader in File Delivery. it's free than post the link for us to download it and if you don't mind let us process it and post it back in the thread. Honestly this could be a fun excercise in post processing and maybe we should have fun and start a thread like this 24 hrs. per image and let the forum members take shots at post to see what there vision of a image should be.  Great idea! Here is the link YouSendIt: The Leader in File Delivery.  Remember, <30 minutes before sunset, not much rain in the Bay Area this winter, so grass is yellow - the Golden State.  Mark's version is great, exactly what I am looking for. Bill Sievers Posted January 29, 2007 Share #29  Posted January 29, 2007 This version processed in Lightroom. Cooled the WB by subtracting yellow and then applied Velvia preset. Hans Roggen Posted January 29, 2007 Share #30  Posted January 29, 2007 Here's one using only my profile in C1 and adding a touch of yellow to preserve the sunsetlike colours. Off course it's kinda hard to tell if the colours are right when you haven't been at the scene and it could use some tweaking in PS, but this time I haven't done anything in PS execpt the jpeg conversion.   Hans Welcome, dear visitor! Jamie Roberts Posted January 29, 2007 Share #34  Posted January 29, 2007 Well, here's my version, using a C1 profile I've got under development (has added greens and blues, though in this case, that was only necessary to hold the sky and the patch of green grass under the tree).  PS CS3 also gave this a "warming over" when I saved it for web (reduced) size after converting to sRGB--much more than usual. I wonder why? So I would slightly de-saturate this a very little bit...  BTW--I left a little underexposed; it's probably not that dark in actual fact either...  Welcome, dear visitor! wparsonsgisnet Posted January 29, 2007 Share #37  Posted January 29, 2007 ... invest in a grayscale card and photograph it at the location with all the surrounding light. This will help you in post-production ...  Alan, do a web search on WhiBal cards. You can order them directly. All my heros on this Forum use this card.  For this shot, hold the card in front of the camera, making sure it is in the same light as that falling on your subjects. In other words, if you were standing in the shade at your camera location, move to get into the late sunlight. You can do this after taking all your shots, of course, unless the sun is sinking too fast.  Hold the card up and take a picture of it.  In PS, you select the image with the gray card and click in the card. The shot will be magically adjusted for you. The card you photographed can be used to adjust any number of images.  The only thing to watch out for is changing light. At this time of day, you may want to take a shot of the WhiBal card periodically.  I bot one of these, the 3.5 x 6 inch card for little money. It's a lifesaver (just like RAW).  If you don't have one of the tutorial/reference books on Photoshop, they are $40-50 well spent. They all explain how to do color balancing on multiple pix at the same time.    You may start with the following (thanks to Jamie Roberts, who posted this in another thread):  ====================== If you're new to digital and new to C1, you can do this:  1) shoot a gray card (I like the WhiBal cards from White Balance Reference - WhiBal Gray Card - Digital Photo RAW Workflow) that's well exposed (but OOF doesn't matter)  2) Shoot away. As long as the light hasn't changed much, you've got your custom WB  3) In C1, first thing you do is click the light gray part of the WhiBal  4) Then "copy" the WB settings to all your shots with the "copy settings" button.  You're done. Now the profiles will work properly.  For example, I just finished looking at some landscape shots, and there was really no way to work with them because there wasn't anything to WB =============  The process to do this in PSCS2 is similar: select all the photos you wish to balance. While you are looking at the one with the WhiBal card in it, just click on the card in the image and all the pix will be adjusted.   Boy, this stuff is fun! woodyspedden Posted January 29, 2007 Share #38  Posted January 29, 2007 I tried to open in C1 Pro but no success. So I processed this in Raw Developer using the RD default tone curve and one of the standard input profiles. I then touched it up in CS3. I boosted red saturation about 5 % and reduced yellow saturation about the same amount then lowered the master saturation by about 5% as well. I was trying to preserve the warm tones the originator was trying to capture and I believe with some success. Anyway my best effort for a 30 minute exercise  Woody  Sadly as always seems to be the case for me the image I now see on the web is considerably less saturated than what I see in Photoshop. I converted to SRGB so i have no Idea what is wrong. Maybe i'll saturate a little more in PS to get it right for posting. I find this really frustrating. Welcome, dear visitor!
