In addition to the internal tests in Solms, Leica would like to provide the beta version to some Leica Forum members. As a large, committed community able to test in a short time a enormous range of lenses and light situations, user feedback will be invaluable in developing this new firmware.
If it's just for adding new lenses forum members won't have much work i guess. A good way to avoid whinings here though. :D

A mate of mine that works for Leica says that for the M8 it will add Full Frame capability, a Manual Shutter Advance Lever, a Cartier-Bresson Mode (??), 2000 Shots per Battery Charge option and an exclusive Press Pass Mode for ALL M8 owners to Top Social Gatherings.

Oh and some boring software updates as well.

Leica Camera already told us one area that the next firmware will be aimed at.

"We did an improvement in a previous update, using the vignetting correction, this improved the effect visibly. But unfortunately we had to recognize that even this was not enough. There are still some complaints, therefore we decided to apply additional correction algorithms for the critical lenses. But developing these need unfortunately some time, because some sequences in the internal data management have to be changed, this is always a difficult and risky modification. Of course correcting this on a PC is an easy thing. But letting the camera do this needs a very simple algorithm, because we would not accept any delay in DNG mode.

We are planning to offer this update as soon as possible, but it will need at least until spring 2011. I hope this answer helps you understand the confusion about the red edges."
