Serial # and production date

Just got my M8 2 days ago. The serial # starts with 31. Is this a first run with the updated applied or a second run with updates made during production.

So I guess the real question is. For those that bought early what are the first 2 # of the serial # on your M8.

I believe they all start with 310 so far. The next four digits seem to be the serial number, and in time the 0 might get taken over. Numbers which have been posted on this forum have ranged from 0500 to 3000 or so.

Thanks for the reply Scott

Well I guess mine must be from the first production run.

The complete # is 3100977.

Other then a slight back focus it's working flawlessly.

The numbers don't seem to accurately reflect production date, at least at this stage. I have a first batch camera with the last 4 of 26xx. All the S/N's I've seen start with 310.

There seem to be plenty of second batch cameras with numbers lower than my 1st.

Well that would be keeping with the Leica tradition.

Could be there is a country code in there somewhere also. I know Nikon does that but that is because Nikon warranties are only good in the country of purchase.

Mine is 3100498, which shipped with 1.09 firmware and the Leica info about the two free IR filters - thus identifying it as something that came from the factory after the initial problems were identified, and solutions discovered. I bought it in the US from a major retailer.

Well, they certainly all over the place, at least in this general range. Obviously these numbers will not be useful to distinguish the first batch subsequent batches. Not really a big deal, I suppose, but it would have been a bit easier.

Although I suppose we don't really know if there is going to be any difference between an early camera that has been sent to Solms and a later camera...

This topic has been discussed ad nauseam for years on the forum. It's obsessive-compulsive to worry about the serial number because it has no bearing on the camera's reliability and they aren't assigned consecutively.

Excuse me but just how do you know they aren't assigned consecutively. That would make giving anything a serial number very difficult. Hey Joe did we use 3107834 yet? How about 3100765.

Totally ridiculous. About the only thing I can think of since the serial # is on the flash shoe is that they manufacture the flash shoes in lots and give them a serial number. Then those flash shoes get placed on bodies during the final assembly at random.

Ed,

Leica manufactures in hand-assembled batches and the serial numbers are not only on the flash shoe but also on UPC stickers placed on the packaging (and I believe the number may also be recorded in the camera's firmware). These are typically bagged together and pulled at the end of assembly. Once the the shoe and stickers are assigned to a camera the bar code is read and recorded for manufacturing date, etc.

I haven't been to the Leica plant, but I have been to several power tool factories that use this system for low-volume production -- including one in Germany. All use essential the same method. In fact, it was explained to me that consecutive numbering is actually more difficult to accomplish with this type of manufacturing and is best used on high-volume products that have automated assembly.

Thanks for the clarification Larry. Sounds good. Yes the serial # is in the firmware and is put in the EXIF.

The various build ranges and their respective M8 serial numbers are interesting. On Wednesday, October 4, 2006, I used a M8 with serial number 3100486, only 12 units from Iron Flatline's, at the Leica Academy in Germany. A colleague next to me used a M8 with serial number 3100762.
