OK, I know I'm a fool to myself, but needs must...

--------------

AB: "Process Only plus CD, please"

Elaine Tesco: "That'll be three days turn-round, Sir."

AB: "Can you do a normal 1 hour service with CD?"

ET: "Certainly, that'll be ready in an hour"

AB: "Thank you"

...Screen goes all wobbly and then refocusses...

"One hour later"

AB: "Are my prints and CD ready?"

ET: "Yes"

AB: "Thanks. Can you dispose of these prints for me?"

ET: "Certainly Sir"

AB: "Thank you very much."

AB exits, store right.

-------

The world has gone completely barking mad.

When I went to my local mall lab for a C41 develop only, the teenage attendant told me the negatives would be useless, as I couldn't view them on my computer. I told him I had a scanner, to which he replied, "but scanners are only good for pictures ..."

Tesco, my mall lab - welcome to the 21st century!

You have never struggled at a branch of Max Spielman in the UK to try and get a roll of XP2 developed - this was my entry for 'the one' last year. The conversation went something along the lines of...

I'd like this film developed, no prints please.

It's a black and white film.

Yes, but it uses the normal colour chemistry.

But it's black and white.

Yes, but it says process C41 on the canister, that's the normal colour chemistry.

I'll have to phone head office....

Pause of about 2 mins while the sales assistant phones someone, then...

They said I can't process is, it's a black and white film.

At that point I left and went to the branch in the next town.

Hi, I'd like to have this roll of film developed without prints.

No problem, it's XP2, that uses the normal processing.

Conclusion, develop Tri-X at home :-)

I feed my IIIc on Kodak 400CN that is processed by the dry cleaners' at my local Sainsburys.

Prices vary (they often throw the disc in for free) but on average I am paying about £7.50 for 36 exposures developed and printed (6x4) and burned to disc. I get an index print, and an index card for the CD (which comes in a hard jewel case).

All this in under an hour AND they text me to tell me it is ready - I pay when I pick up. Why do I use them? All of the above, plus the last time I had a set of prints and a CD made at Jessops it cost me over a tenner, and I had to take them back because they were dusty as hell and had been badly printed (frames out of alignment and crooked) on both prints and scans. Never, ever again... This is an example of the results I get now...

I went to the local shop a few days ago and asked for 1 hour developing.

Shop: Singles or doubles sir?

Me: Negatives only.

Shop: That means doubles right?

Me: No, that means just process the negatives and give the results back to me.

Shop: Ok, I can run them through the machine, but the guy that develops them is at lunch right now, so it will take an hour.

Me: Just out of curiosity, what does running the negatives through the machine do to the negatives?

Shop: I don't know?

Me: Are you sure I can trust you with my film?

Shop: Can you come back in an hour and 10 minutes Sir?

well I dont expect that one can expect local 1 hr staff to know too much - they just follow a process.

While I am not impressed with the kodak c41 I have to say I quite like XP2. Yes its a different beast to Tri-X etc but the results are ok and it holds the highlights well and even runs trough my scanner well too.

I take my XP2 to Tescos for developing. I ask them to leave it in a strip in the canister. Charge 99p - who can ask for anything more.

My local Photo Factory shop used to do this for me, sadly they have been taken over by Jessops, and now dealing with them the saying "casting pearls before swine" comes to mind!!!!

I process my own now.

For a High St processor, I've always found Snappy Snaps (in the UK) very good. Not as cheap as Tesco or Sainsburys though!

I've also found them good. cheapness is not the main thing, quality is , thats also the point of having quality cameras!

When I worked part time in a camera shop, it always amazed me that people would spend a fortune on the very best equipment, then try to use the cheapest film and cheapest processing. What was the point of spending all that money on the camera and lenses???

We used to group customers into either "camera wearers" or "camera users".
