jc_braconi Posted February 28, 2011 Share #2 Posted February 28, 2011 this plain brass rear lens looks strange for me
luigi bertolotti Posted February 28, 2011 Share #3 Posted February 28, 2011 Yes, that a bit strange... Black DR do exist (one is even displayed in our Wiki Section), but I'd say that this lens would deserve a well done inspection : can be very interesting (black, asterisk...) but could be even a 3rd party rebuild-repaint... earleygallery Posted February 28, 2011 Share #4 Posted February 28, 2011 Possibly a chrome lens that was stripped and repainted? The paint looks quite fresh/new. If it is meant to be original, the condition of the box doesn't match the lens..... Caveat emptor and all that!
sparkie Posted February 28, 2011 Share #5 Posted February 28, 2011 The question is, is this an original black paint 50/2.0 DR lens outfit. These are supposedly very very rare, if authentic. I have seen one from one of the top Leica afficionados (well know leica historian and author). When I inspected it, I walked away unconvinced in was 100% authentic. The back of this lens, brass mount is common in very early Leica lenses, eg. the 50/1.4 Black Paint first version, these are often in bare brass - the very earliest. However this one is too clean. Looking at the photos the white numerals look inconsistent and too new, some un-aged looking. f16 look poorly finished. Its quite easy to fake this lens. Get a chrome DR, strip the chrome and repaint. Also the * looks fishy - poster was correct this denotes a duplicate lens S/N. Also the lens cap is not correct. Leica logo style stamp is too early for this lens. Unless this is inspected in person I wouldn't say this is the real deal. Too many inconsistencies. A prototype of this lens sold at a well regarded auction in 2007 for over 20K USD
doubice Posted February 28, 2011 Share #6 Posted February 28, 2011 The lens cap also looks 'interesting'. It is a cap for a Summitar, not for a Summicron. And - Summitar caps did not come in black..... Best, Jan

k-hawinkler Posted March 1, 2011 Share #11 Posted March 1, 2011 From ebay: "Question & Answer Answered On 28-Feb-11 Q: The asterisk at the end of a Leica lens serial number denotes a duplicate serial number, not a special edition. These do occur occasionally, and it is this that makes the lens special, even more so as it is black! Kind Regards, John 28-Feb-11 A: Hello, thank you for your comments there certainly seems to be great interest in the lens, sincerly, jdiconsult" They don't say who painted it black. sparkie Posted March 1, 2011 Share #13 Posted March 1, 2011 Its too sloppy to be a shintaro job IMO
jaques Posted March 1, 2011 Share #14 Posted March 1, 2011 It is a bit coincidental that the Christies Auction was in the UK- and now this lens- with the same serial number- is also offered in the UK.... could be a coincidence... Caveat Emptor! if not shintaro: Luton?
jpattison Posted March 1, 2011 Author Share #15 Posted March 1, 2011 The seller has posted a new message.. PLEASE NOTE WE HAVE JUST BEEN ADVISED BY A LEICA EXPERT THAT THIS LENS HAS THE SAME NUMBER AS A LENS SOLD BY CHRISTIES AUCTIONEERS IN 2002. IT IS POSSIBLE THEREFORE THAT THIS LENS HAS SINCE BEEN EXPERTLY PAINTED IN A BLACK FINISH AND MAY NOT BE AN ORIGINAL FINISH. WE WILL STILL LEAVE IT FOR SALE AS IT IS A BEAUTIFUL ITEM BUT BIDDERS SHOULD BE AWARE OF THIS INFORMATION AS IT CONFLICTS WITH THE PREVIOUS INFORMATION WE GAVE. WE ARE ADVISED IT IS TOO MUCH OF A COINCIDENCE TO BE A DIFFERENT LENS THAN THAT SOLD IN 2002
