Ok so until I get my reader for SD cards today I have been connection the camera to my PC with a USB cable to transfer images. When I open Win Explorer or use Win image transfer window that pops up when the camera is connected all I see are .TIF files. Where are the .DNG files?

What am I missing here.

I have installed C1 LE but have not used there transfer part of the program.

I though that images stored on the card where in the .DNG file format/extension.

Ed,

Check your explorer settings. Open a folder window. Hold the windows key down and press [E]. Then select the "Tools" pull down menu. Here you click on "Folder options". A new window opens up, select the "View" tab. Check the "Hide extentions of known file types". This option is, for some idiotic reason, checked by default. Unchecking it allows you to see the file's type in explorer.

Thganks for the reply.

It's not that, that is the first thing I do when setting up Windows.

I had to connect the camera directly to a USB cable going to my Windows XP Pro PC. Opening Win Explorer I see the camera listed at or near the bottom of the folder list. Clicking on M8 it shows the files on the SD card as L0001.tif, IE with a .(DOT)TIF file extension not a .(DOT)DNG extension. Is Winodws somehow transposing the DNG extension to TIF. I get the same thing, .TIF, when using the Win Scanner & Camera Wizard image transfer app.

I have a SD card reader now, came today along with a couple of 2GB SD cards, and will use that to transfer from card to PC. I'll see what extension the files have when doing the transfer from the card reader.

It just funny with all the talk of DNG (Digital Negative) files and I'm see TIFF files on the card when viewing the card still in the camera.

Are you supposed to use C1 to transfer the files from the card? Does C1 change the extension from .TIF to .DNG during the transfer?

With all other digital cameras I've used, mostly Nikon, the RAW files always have a extension of that maker. For Nikon it's always .NEF no matter how or what program you use to view the list of file on the cards.

Reading with usb directly from M8 = TIFF

Reading from the CD card in the computer slot or a card reader = DNG

Right. I connected the dual card reader and popped in the SD card and the files show as DNG.

Is this the same as when connecting the camera to a Mac or is it exclusively a Windows thing.

It is a Windows bug. It is inadvisable anyway to use any digital camera as a card reader. (guilty of doing so in the past myself:()

Well I had no choice in the matter last night as I didn't have a SD card reader and I just had to download the first images I took with the M8. I do/did have a CF card reader but the SD card felt a little loose in the slot of CF card reader, just kidding.

Ed, it seems to be a feature of XP that 'sees' the files as Tiffs. You won't have the problem with a reader.

DNGs are TIFF files, as a bus is a bus no matter how the seats are arranged. Not sure why Micro$oft ignores the files' extension when read through the camera, but that's what it seems to do. Perhaps because Leica/Jenoptik has the camera show up as something other than a USB storage device, to facilitate Leica Capture s/w features.

As others have said, a card reader is optimal, and also less of a load on the camera battery ;)

Dave

If you change the extension from .tif to .dng then the files work fine in C1. MS just changes the extension.

Thanks barjohn

That would be something MS/Windows would do. No wonder Nikon View crashes when trying to display these .tif's from the M8. They're really DNG's and NV can't display them.

I'll have to go through the image with the tif extension and change them to dng.

I know this is an old thread, but found it on a search when I just discovered the same thing. For anyone else that runs into this glitch while in the process of procuring a card reader... :)

1 - Assuming you're on WinXP, click Start -> Run -> Type cmd and hit Enter

2 - In the command prompt, navigate to the folder with your TIF's (e.g., if you have a folder named "m8" on your desktop, you would just type cd m8)

3 - type rename *.tif *.dng, hit Enter, and you're golden...
