Advertisement Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 Hi Bill Sievers, Take a look here The Glow (M8 and Summilux). I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
strick Posted January 26, 2007 Share #2 Posted January 26, 2007 I don't want to irritate you, but for me this almost seems to be made with a soft-focus lens (in the white-shining parts especially). I find this look disturbing. Cheers, Greg
Bill Sievers Posted January 26, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted January 26, 2007 More from the same combination http://www.flickr.com/photos/captainvideo/367935592/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/captainvideo/369523188/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/captainvideo/368830369/
stunsworth Posted January 26, 2007 Share #4 Posted January 26, 2007 Sorry, but I don't like these. The first has the kind of bloom on the guy to the left that I normally expect with a dusty mirror on a scanner, and the others ave very high contrast. This isn't how my Pre-ASPH Summilux used to behave.
macusque Posted January 26, 2007 Share #5 Posted January 26, 2007 Bill, I really like the look of this one: http://www.flickr.com/photos/captainvideo/369523188/ Btw, I also found the "glow" on the first one you posted a bit disturbing. Thanks for sharing
goldchen96 Posted January 26, 2007 Share #6 Posted January 26, 2007 I also recall the glow to be more subtle. Welcome, dear visitor! msr Posted January 26, 2007 Share #7 Posted January 26, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Julian, that's quite a wonderful photograph. And I agree that it aptly demonstrates the subtleness of the Leica glow. Bill, I too find the first image disturbing. To me it looks like either blown highlights or atomic radiation. goldchen96 Posted January 26, 2007 Share #8 Posted January 26, 2007 Thank you. Maybe we can see some more examples, anybody?
ddp Posted January 26, 2007 Share #9 Posted January 26, 2007 Is there a thumbs down icon? My 'Lux does not exhibit characteristics like that - and I wouldn't want it to. Captain Video is a prolific street shooter to be certain - but the images aren't going to sell me an M8.
ddp Posted January 26, 2007 Share #10 Posted January 26, 2007 Sorry - I didn't realize we were discussing the pre-asph here. Julian's image is more of what I would expect from that vintage.
earleygallery Posted January 26, 2007 Share #11 Posted January 26, 2007 I get that sort of glow from my foggy/hazy 1936 vintage Summar
marknorton Posted January 26, 2007 Share #12 Posted January 26, 2007 Leica glow? Stuff and nonsense, IMHO. I'll pass, thanks.
Bill Sievers Posted January 26, 2007 Author Share #13 Posted January 26, 2007 Well it certainly is a good way to provoke a reaction. Glow, halo M8 ;-) Heres some Summicron glow ;;-) Make a Wish on Flickr - Photo Sharing!
pascal_meheut Posted January 26, 2007 Share #14 Posted January 26, 2007 One of my lenses gave me the same glow. It went back to Solms and returned normal...
gesper Posted January 26, 2007 Share #15 Posted January 26, 2007 Hard to believe some of these looked like that right out of the camera (at least in DNG). Looks like contrast cranked way up in software.
arthury Posted January 26, 2007 Share #16 Posted January 26, 2007 I don't mean to be rude but if I am interpreting the "glow" to mean a type of monochromatic aberration (called spherical aberrations) then, I will pass. From what I understood in the past, the Leica glow in HC-B's images are due to the fact that he was using older lenses which are *not* as well corrected as the current ones; thus, producing less contrast and more aberrations. The lower contrast allowed him to shoot in high contrast situations and yet produced images that he was after. The spherical aberrations surrounding light sources or highlights gave you "the glow". grantray Posted January 26, 2007 Share #20 Posted January 26, 2007 M6, APX 100, 1,4/35 pre asph. @ 1,4. nice lens. Julian, what vintage is that lens?!? The vignetting is fantastic, and if that glow is what haze on the lens creates, then one for me, please. I can think of several types of shooting this would be perfect for. Also, you've some great shots on your site. -grant
