Shootist Posted January 25, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted January 25, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just got off the phone with Liz at Leica USA. The call was about the registration card that comes with the camera. I asked her if I needed to mail it in because I had done the online registration and ordered my IR filter. She said YES I need to mail that card in because the online reg goes to Germany and she, Leica USA, has no way to check that reg. So for all that have gotten a M8 recently or plan on getting one in the USA even though you do the online registration you still need to mail that card to Leica USA. Tony C. Posted January 25, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted January 25, 2007 My understanding, broadly speaking, is that companies selling their wares in the U.S. cannot legally require consumers to send in warranty cards. In other words, as long as the product was purchased through an authorized dealer, and the owner has proof of purchase, the full warranty must be honored. Â Perhaps the filter offer is a separate issue, but I'm with Bill: it shouldn't be necessary to send in a card in any case. Â Tony C.
herbkell Posted January 25, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted January 25, 2007 That is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard. Don't they all work for the same company? Â How hard could it be to give Leica US access to the online data base of warranty registrants?

jamriman Posted January 26, 2007 Share #8 Â Posted January 26, 2007 Why bother with an email confirmation from Leica then. Doesn't make sense. I will email Leica on this matter.
bnelson Posted January 26, 2007 Share #9 Â Posted January 26, 2007 The reason I think this is incredible is that it asks us, the customer, to do the same thing twice. I registered online the day I got my M8, December 29th, and have received nothing from Leica yet. Â It just seems to me that us early adopter customers are the one jumping through the hoops. robo48 Posted January 26, 2007 Share #10 Â Posted January 26, 2007 I purchased my M8 in November. Registered on line when the link appeared on this forum. On Saturday Jan. 20th, I received an email from Leica USA with instructions on how to returm my camera. If NJ is not aware of those cameras that were registered on line how did they contact me? Shootist Posted January 26, 2007 Author Share #11 Â Posted January 26, 2007 I purchased my M8 in November. Registered on line when the link appeared on this forum. On Saturday Jan. 20th, I received an email from Leica USA with instructions on how to returm my camera. If NJ is not aware of those cameras that were registered on line how did they contact me? Â Â I have no idea. I was only relaying what I was told be a Leica USA employee that is in charge of warranties. Could be Leica Germany notified Leica USA to contact people that had the first version M8. Also those emails could of come from Germany with a shipping address for NJ. She, Liz, specifically said that Leica USA does not have access to the online registration system. Also I was never asked for the dealers name or the date of purchase with the online registration. Once I typed in the serial # and hit the next or continue button I was taken to a page that said something like "Verifying serial #" then the next page was for my name and address to ship the filters to and then the next page was for selecting the IR filters to be ordered. It surprised me that they didn't ask for the date of purchase or the dealer name. That is why I called. I really don't think Leica USA IS the same as Leica Germany. Just like Nikon USA is a separate entity from Nikon Japan. Maybe not as extreme but still a separate company.
wparsonsgisnet Posted January 26, 2007 Share #12 Â Posted January 26, 2007 Ed, thanks for posting this. Â I'm sending in my card as a result. I looked at it today and wondered what I would do with it .... Â Also, It's not surprising that Leica/Germany isn't giving Leica/USA any leeway or freedom. robo48 Posted January 26, 2007 Share #13 Â Posted January 26, 2007 I agree with everything that you are saying with one exception. The email was sent from leicausa.com. As you said, it is possible that a list was sent to NJ from Germany. The email contained a name and telephone number. I will try reaching someone but it probably makes sense to send in the registration card regardless.

The return address can be totally different then the address it was sent from. There is NO Leicausa.com domain name. The USA site is. leica-camera.us Although after a search of the Leica site they do list the email addresses as @leicacamerausa.com
Guest guy_mancuso Posted January 26, 2007 Share #15 Â Posted January 26, 2007 Well I never send registration cards in. If you need a repair with leica all you need is a receipt from a authorized dealer that clearly gives the date it was purchased. At least that has been my experience with Leica, Canon and Kodak

The filter(s) you ordered will be shipped directly to you and completely free of any charge on the date mentioned. A copy of your order has been sent to your e-mail address. It only cost me $0.39 and a couple of minutes to fill it out. Actually it only cost me $0.20 as I got the stamp from the office manager and that all the change I had on my.
