Y Strap

I know there is information on this subject in the archives but I'm looking for up to date information. I'm thinking of purchasing a Y-strap which basically hangs your 10G's worth of Leica and lens from one lug. Is this safe? is the m9 and lets say a 35 cron too heavy to hang by one lug? I understand if you are using a "standard" strap if one lug breaks the camera will fall but in my mind it feels safer. I like how and where the camera sits with the Y-strap but is it safe. Thank you for your advice and comments.

Why buying a Y-strap? I made my own from the original Leica Strap that came with my M8.2 Just attach the two metal lugs at the end of the strap and make a loop. Use a keyring and a "Hook" and you're set. Costs about $25, mainly for the Hook

I have no problem hanging my M8.2 plus 50 from this homemade strap. Advantage is you can easily remove your Leica from the strap and re-attach it.

Most wrist straps, popular with M users for years, attach at a single lug. True, the hand is usually also gripping the camera, but I've never heard of a lug failing (but maybe they have). If you use a neck strap (and two lugs) and one lug fails, the camera still crashes to the floor.

Good question, though I wasn't much help.

I think its safe regarding the lug, but the camera swings around a lot because the strap needs to be longer than a normal strap to go across the body. And it tends to be a heavy strap because of the extra length. It is clumsier in the long run than a normal strap.

Exactly my experience. Had one for a while attached to my M8. It's safe, but clumsier (although I did't feel any the extra weight). Key issue is that the camera is not in a "natural" position and therefore tends to be banged around.

Since I bought the Y-strap for my M8 I never used any other strap again. I’m fully satisfied. If I use it together with a heavy lens like the Nocti my felling is a bit mixed however, just a feeling.

I saw several home-made solutions none of which convinced me. The most important reason to use it from my point of view:

  • very little banging around if you want to keep your hands free and if you adjust it to the right length
  • I can easyly wear it under my jacket though having it ready to take a shot immediately (as to see on the promotion video)
  • I can really walk for hours without even noticing that I still carry a camera with me.

Absolutely worth a try and the $ 25.

Best

... Is this safe? ...

Max,

What does "safe" actually mean? If we talk in terms of 'risk' then the answer will be clearer.

For example, the risk of a single lug breaking and allowing your M9 to hit the ground is very low but the risk of you tripping and falling over while wearing a standard neck strap with both lugs attached or a Y-Strap is likely to be higher.

The major risk is not the strength of the lug.:)

I made one for myself - nylon webbing, velcro, O rings. Works fine. Seems very secure (I use it w/ 35/50/90). It hangs on my left side. I often steady it by letting my arm rest against it, which prevents swinging and bouncing, and gives me a (perhaps false) sense of security. I really like the slide-ability of the large O-ring. And I like the over-the-opposite-shoulder set up. My prior method was to hang the camera on my right side and shoulder, and it was always sliding off, even with the rubber device. If I lengthened the conventional strap and hung it on the opposite shoulder, it was hard to get to my eye. My other alternative was to double-wrap the standard strap securely around my elbow, and keep the camera in my hand. Very convenient and steady while shooting but not good for general wandering.
