zoomstop Posted February 17, 2011 Share #1 Posted February 17, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Last weekend I decided to order RRS's Lecia M9/M8 base plate (Model # BM9- to allow for my M's to mount on arca swiss mount and Tripod. Well, to make a long story shore, I like the build of the plate. For a $165 including shipping, it should be a good product... right. The base plat has 7 machined holes for "accessories". For those of us who do not order the accessories, you will see 7 3.5 mm metic holes exposing your batter /memory compartment. The plate ships with 7 cheese rubber fillers that you have to insert into the holes and cut. The problem is it is nearly impossible to cut them flush. If they are not flush, the door will note close. After a day of fiddling with the product, I called the customer service line (888-777-5557) to let them know that I was so disappointed. The man on the line was distant and not very cordial. He basically gave me the size of the screw I would need and I was on my own to find it on the internet. Well, I found a vendor that would supplies these screws at a cost of $0.01 a screw. That would be a wapping $2.15 with shipping. Now really... Really Right Stuff, Could you not afford to pickup 7 additional screws and ship it with the darn Leica plate or even offed to purchase it for me? If you like you can contact me on my email address dmiskinyar@gmail.com. BTW-- the last time I counted I have ~$2K of you gear in my studio. Word to the Wise.... Don't order this base plate until Really Right Stuff starts including screws to seal the holes properly.

zoomstop Posted February 17, 2011 Author Share #4 Posted February 17, 2011 Hear is RRS's Response WOW! David, We do not have screws for sale to plug those holes without mounting the L-component or the Grip to the body - they would be too long without the extra components in place. The threads should be M3-0.5 size, but the screws we have are 5mm threads and are thus too long for such use. If you have any further questions please let me know. tdtaylor Posted February 17, 2011 Share #5 Posted February 17, 2011 This isn't the company I know. I have LOTS of RSS equipment, it is of fabulous quality, and they have always been most attentive and helpful. I was impressed how they worked with LUF members and developed the base plate with our urging- not many companies are that responsive to a smaller market. When they fashioned the tolerances to tight for a number of M9s (mine fits perfectly), I believe they made the problem right for all those involved, and were very transparent about it. There are many threads to this effect. By the way, my plugs were installed without issue in a matter of minutes, although I definitely do like the idea of screws better, especially for the price point for the product. Hope your next interface with them is more satisfactory.

If the screws they have are too long then why don't they order the correct screws. Or machine them? They should include them as a standard part. No need to have them for sale. Just include them as a matter of course. But I guess we're just screwed in the meantime?
hoppyman Posted February 17, 2011 Share #7 Posted February 17, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I fitted the rubber plugs on the side where the grip goes and I have the vertical attachment fitted. Trimming off three rubber plugs took me all of 60 seconds. Zero issues here. I'm not sure why you had so much trouble. When you are describing protruding plugs preventing closure it sounds like you have fitted them backwards! You want to push them in from the inside surface and pull them down from the outside. The inside (larger) end then sits perfectly flush. The plugs go the opposite way to the small bolts supplied with the matching accessories. If you want you can stretch the plugs a little before trimming the outside end with a very sharp thin blade. A craft knife or razor blade is fine. Once trimmed they will retract a fraction but any tiny protrusion on the outside surface is irrelevant.. You should be feeling slightly embarrassed about now or at least a little repentant
zoomstop Posted February 17, 2011 Author Share #8 Posted February 17, 2011 Actually, I am not embarrassed at all. My point is that they should ship with a better solution than little rubber plugs. But thank you for pointing that out.

chuckw Posted February 17, 2011 Share #10 Posted February 17, 2011 I have the RRS base plate with the grip, but no L bracket. Installing the rubber plugs in the screw holes left empty (by the lack of an L bracket) was no problem at all; I simply pulled the plugs through the holes and cut them flush with a razor blade. They have remained in place for a few months now. That said, I do agree with the OP that a short screw might be a more elegant solution. A screw with a small head might work better than the set screws shown in the link because it could be tightened down more securely than a set screw. But thank you for pointing that out. I was unsympathetic because I thought that you were pretty tough on RRS. Yep, the plugs are not quite as neat as some bolts, that's fine. From your original post: .................................... "The problem is it is nearly impossible to cut them flush. If they are not flush, the door will note close." ........................................ Can you explain how the trimmed rubber plugs are causing this problem? The trimmed end is outside the baseplate unless you fittted them backwards.
