NZDavid Posted February 14, 2011 Share #1 Posted February 14, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Almost invariably the term "point and shoot" is derided. For example, "I wanted to get an X1, a real Leica, not another P/S..." But why? Surely some of the best photographs have been point and shoot moments? Or snapshots. Another derisive term. Street photography is largely point and shoot. HCB was a P/S snapper. And Leica has always been the ultimate point and shoot camera, from the Leica I to the M9. Set shutter speed and aperture, prefocus, point and shoot. What could be simpler? By contrast, many of today's digicams scarcely qualify for the term. There are so many modes, menus, and multi-functions buttons, it's easy to nudge them by mistake. For me, the simpler the better. Isn't it about time "point and shoot" lost its negative image and true minimalist P/S cameras were looked up to?

chris_tribble Posted February 14, 2011 Share #2 Posted February 14, 2011 I've been looking up to the M9 with 35 cron at f8 + hyperfocal + auto ISO / A mode for over a year. IMHO you can't finde a better point and shoot...
Guest Holy Moly Posted February 14, 2011 Share #3 Posted February 14, 2011 Ricoh's GRDs are the ultimate p&s cams as the Linhof Technika is.......with a bit slower pointing....
budrichard Posted February 14, 2011 Share #4 Posted February 14, 2011 For P&S, i use an M7 with 21mm f2.8 ASPH for about 50% of my work. Just set the aperture, infinity focus to the aperture and shoot away.-Dick
earleygallery Posted February 15, 2011 Share #5 Posted February 15, 2011 It's just words, it doesn't matter what label you use. Point and shoot to me, means just that. A camera you can pick up, point and shoot i.e. it's auto everything. Using a Leica, setting exposure so you can shoot at 5.6/8 and use zone focus isn't point and shoot in that sense. At the end of the day either type of camera can produce the results, and it's results what matter!
Jackson Posted February 16, 2011 Share #6 Posted February 16, 2011 D-Lux 5. Just got it. Perfect point and shoot..I'm still confused about how the myriad other modes work on this particular camera, but the Snapshot Mode will work fine for the moment. The camera is beautifully finished (I know it is a Panasonic in disguise, but so what.). NZDavid Posted February 16, 2011 Author Share #7 Posted February 16, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, I'd never have thought of a Linhof Technika as a point and shoot, but why not! Leica M, can be. D-Lux 5, yes, so long as you don't nudge settings by mistake. Actually an excellent camera. Just words? Yes, James, but I'd like to see better definitions. What exactly is a point and shoot camera? A fully automatic one? A semi automatic? Merely a compact one? My definition would be on that is as fast and simple to use as possible. And that's not a bad thing.
Digitom Posted February 16, 2011 Share #8 Posted February 16, 2011 I've been looking up to the M9 with 35 cron at f8 + hyperfocal + auto ISO / A mode for over a year. IMHO you can't finde a better point and shoot... I agree: of course no better, but many cheaper and when you look at the photos taken in the snap situations and their quality, the cheaper solutions do their job really good (maybe same, some better). So finally the Leica M is IMHO no P&S camera, if one uses it only for that situation, it is a waste of money, because the potential of that camera is on another side.
