I never suggest getting a Noctilux as your only 50mm. It really needs to be paired with a 50mm Summicron so you don't have to carry the weight of the Noctilux when you don't need its speed. Bill W Posted January 25, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted January 25, 2007 I just got the 50 lux and it is superb. I also just got my M8 and it is superb. The only lens I have used so far is the 50. I have only had time to take some test shots for white balance variations. Even my wife said "those are amazing" and that was looking at the 2.5 inch screen on the back of the camera. The depth and color look nothing like those taken with our Nikons. Why could it not have come last week when we were off three days for the weather "ice". We don't do well in Texas with ice. It delivers really nice portraits when shot wide open or close to wide open- in both B & W and color. The balance of this lens with an M8 is perfect. I thought it was a little too short as a portrait lens for film but I love it on the M8 - fantastic. A little wider focal length gap from your 35 is perhaps desirable for the first 2 lenses, besides almost as big a discount as the Nocti dollar wise. With the 35mm Summicron, I would go for either the 24mm Elmarit or the 75mm Summicron, depending on whether you think you need to go wider or longer. The new WATE offers the biggest discount, but again, I would say that this is not your second lens. Â I think you should base your decision on maximising use of the lens, not maximising the discount, so the 75mm Summilux only makes sense if you really need that extra stop. I have two cameras and have ordered the WATE but am in two minds what to buy with the second, if any. I'm actually uncomfortable even about the WATE for reasons I've covered elsewhere and I feel sure it will be redesigned in quite short order, just like the NOTE was.  Just wish a "28mm Summilux" and "24mm Summicron" were realities instead of figments of my imagination. tom0511 Posted January 25, 2007 Share #16  Posted January 25, 2007 If I had 35mm allready I would want something a little different so I would probably either go: 24mm, because its very nice, I like the FOV on the M8, you dont need external viewfinder or if you liek wide a lot: Wide Tri-Elmar  or if you like the normal range a lot you might also consider the 28-35-50 Tri-Elmar (which I just got after struggeling with myself for some time). You would have the 35prime when you need a fast lens and additionally 28 and 50mm.  If however you like little more compressed Teles I would go for the 75cron asph. I have the 75lux but find the smaller size of the 75 cron temting.  cheers, tom  Comment: I think Leicas 30%-off deal is clever. They make many people buying lenses. By selling directly to the customer they might not even make less money compared to selling for original price through stores. They get all the customer-data, and they do check out direct-selling. I would buy it second-hand, but they rarely come on the market, like all the newer lenses. Alan's lens for $1500 is the best deal I have heard of for this lens. What shape is it in, Alan? Â Tom, there is another reason it is clever, and one why it is not: people with great lenses will be less likely to jump ship, but the dealers have been cut out, and running a dealership is not easy. egibaud Posted January 25, 2007 Share #18 Â Posted January 25, 2007 After thinking for a long time, I ordered a 35mm Summilux to have something fast... and then I was doubting between 50 lux 75 cron 75 lux... and I eventually ordered a 75 cron. Its optic is more recent than the lux and the ISO doing fine quite high I prefer to save money and weight and get a X 1.25 magnifyer. I shall complete with a 21 or 24 at a later date, I do not feel to happy about external viewer but I've read that 21 comes to the window border so it can be used without viewer. I was thinking of getting the 50mm Noctilux F1 to complete the set but I read that others are not so excited by the Noctilux 50mm lens and recommend one of the other 50mm variants. In 'half syllables of non rocket science' talk could someone please explain the downside of a seemingly (albeit to a newbie) great lens. Many thanks.....
