I would like to purchase the current 50mm Summilux ASPH. I see them listed at the large NY-based stores listed at $3695, but of course there's no stock available. When I turn to sources like eBay I see several shops selling for $5000+. Is this price simply due to market demand?

Yeah, it is due to demad, I would just put an order with a local leica dealer and wait. the 1000+ dollars you save can buy you a CV or Zeiss equivalent to tie you over if you are in need of a fast 50 in a hurry

That's exactly what I did, bought a voigtlander 50/1.1 while I was waiting.

Though, I've been waiting for over 6 months now, and I'm getting a bit impatient.

I put my order in at the Leica store in London, thinking they'd get stock first, but I guess they also had the longest waiting list.

Check with several dealers to find out how long their waiting list is.

I finally decided to buy the 50 Summilux last week, put my name on the waiting list at PopFlash, and bought my copy yesterday after they advised me it would arrive at their shop this Thursday. I will have it in hand next week.

That's not much worse than buying a new car...

Regards, Jim

The inflated prices on eBay are not necessarily the market prices. Some overseas sellers put those prices but those lenses are not actually selling, not at those inflated prices, at least. They just relist them after the auction is over. Somehow though, we get the impression that indeed those buy-it-now prices at those dealers are the actual going prices :D.

Back to reality - it may sound weird but on hot commodities like selected Leica lenses, you have to put money down to guarantee your place in the waiting list. Indeed, Zeiss lenses are readily available and you can buy/use them until the Leica lens of your choice is available.

A 2nd hand pre asph, ZM f/1.5 or a CV f/1.5 have/are been used by a lot of people, and judging by their prices there is a resonable demand for them. Some M9 people may like the early preasph signature more, pastel shades and softer contrast goes will with the M9 sensor.

They may not replace by asph when it is available.
