kidigital Posted January 24, 2007 Share #1 Posted January 24, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Now that you've had the M8 for a few days, weeks or months (or even if it is sitting in Solms), what lens is on your M8 most often? Is it the same or different than you thought it would be coming from film, a dslr, full-frame and or cropped perspective? Personally, I'm finding it interesting to see how my preferences evolve as I work through the rangefinder/digital/crop filters that influence what I like to shoot with on the camera. Advertisement Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 Hi kidigital, Take a look here What's Your Favorite Lens on the M8?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Guest guy_mancuso Posted January 24, 2007 Share #2 Posted January 24, 2007 Kurt for me the transition was easy with focal lengths because i was using the DMR for over a year and the crop factor the DMR has but i can still answer part of that question sort of. I love them all to be honest and picking a favorite is really hard but if it was one than i would say the 28 cron is the go to lens.
Hans Roggen Posted January 24, 2007 Share #3 Posted January 24, 2007 The lens i use most often is my elmarit 21. It's the one i would take with me if i was restricted to one lens only. I often shoot wide angle pictures. The 16-35mm is the one i use most on my Canons. To call it my favorite lens would be exagerating. Every lens has its advantages and characteristics. And i don't mean in terms of overall sharpness or barrel distortion or anything else technical. The 21 (and the CV 15 for that matter) suit my way of photography. I like to get real close to my subject. On the other hand when i'm shooting a soccer match i wouldn't leave home without my Canon 400/2.8 and when i'm taking pictures of my little daughter i like the 90 summicron although focussing that thing on an ever moving subject is quite difficult to put it mildly. So, in short: the elmarit 21. Hans
kidigital Posted January 24, 2007 Author Share #4 Posted January 24, 2007 Guy, with these M lenses, it's a bit like trying to pick a favorite child. I definitely know what you mean. Was the 28 your favorite go-to lens on the DMR or do find that you've gone wider with the rangefinder?
Guest guy_mancuso Posted January 24, 2007 Share #5 Posted January 24, 2007 I have gone a little wider but i do love the 75mm and 50 a ton. the 50 i did not use often on the DMR. So things have changed slightly. But your right about picking a favorite child , so hard
carstenw Posted January 24, 2007 Share #6 Posted January 24, 2007 I have only had the CV15, 50 Lux Asph, and 135/2.8 for a long time, and the 50 was of course always on. Now that I have a 35/2 Asph that is always on the lens. I am also planning on a 28/2 and 75/2, but I expect that the 35/2 Asph will be the lens living on the camera. I really do like the 50-equivalent-length a lot, and this is a sweet little lens.
johnbuckley Posted January 24, 2007 Share #7 Posted January 24, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) For me, the 35 Summilux is my favorite lens with my M8 -- if favorite is defined as the default lens left on the camera most of the time. Having said that, I am stunned by how great the 24 Elmarit is with it.
abrewer Posted January 24, 2007 Share #8 Posted January 24, 2007 I thought it was interesting that Michael Reichmann chose his 28/35/50 Tri-Elmar in the article on his website. Best of all worlds, maybe. Thanks. Allan
pemayeux Posted January 24, 2007 Share #9 Posted January 24, 2007 35 summilux asph. Sharp as a razor. The look of the actual prints from the Epson 2400 printing on Red River Polar Matt paper is so much like Kodachrome it is scary. I knew I'd love the file quality but after using it and printing from them I am blown away. (FWIW - I'm coming from a 5D, having used the Digilux 2 prior). LJL Posted January 24, 2007 Share #10 Posted January 24, 2007 Still using a 1.3x crop on my Canon 1DMkII cameras, the 1.33x AOV on the M8 is fairly "normal" for me at this point. (The full frame of the 1DsMkII is nicer for all the closer in type shooting, however.) I find my favorite lens to be the CV 15/4.5, just because it delivers such great looking perpsectives. However, for more traditional shooting, I find the CV 35/1.2 Nokton on the M8 more than anything else in my present kit. That may change when I add the 75 Cron or Notilux, but for now, the 35mm translation to nearly 47mm AOV is really nice for cafe shooting, and the f1.2 speed of the Nokton helps there too. For more street shooting, the Zeiss 25/2.8 (or a Leica 24/2.8) would be my choice. LJ
wparsonsgisnet Posted January 24, 2007 Share #11 Posted January 24, 2007 During the 6 weeks the M8 has been here, the lens most often used has turned out to be the 24 and, following that, the 35. I have 24 f2.8 asph, 35 f1.4 asph, 50 f1.4 asph, and 75 f1.4. It turns out that they are most used in that order. I have yet to use my 90 'cron (or acquire a 486 filter for it). neila Posted January 24, 2007 Share #12 Posted January 24, 2007 I have a 35, 50 and a 90. My favourite is the 50 Summicron as it seems so much sharper. I should buy a better 35 - I have a Leitz 35mm which I bought second hand and am not really in love with for some reason.....
pascal_meheut Posted January 24, 2007 Share #13 Posted January 24, 2007 28mm cron. Add the 75mm cron and I need nothing else.
Giulio Zanni Posted January 24, 2007 Share #14 Posted January 24, 2007 28 summicron Giulio
asfeir Posted January 24, 2007 Share #15 Posted January 24, 2007 28 cron
roubaix Posted January 24, 2007 Share #16 Posted January 24, 2007 That's easy NONE. Still waiting for the camera. Though I love the look of the unused 35 Cron and 90 Elmar in my bag... Peter
Eoin Posted January 24, 2007 Share #17 Posted January 24, 2007 35 Summilux Asph is the lens most on the camera, lovely images, 21 Elmarit Asph for the wider side of things, again a fantastic performer. The 75 Summicron while being my favorite focal length I have yet to warm to it's clinical rendition. The Noctilux while not a member of the family yet is eagerly awaited. How can you ask to choose just one from such an esteemed line up. All or none.
tbarker13 Posted January 24, 2007 Share #18 Posted January 24, 2007 For now, I would say it is the 35 lux asph. But that may change as soon as I take advantage of the discount to get the 28 cron.
atufte Posted January 24, 2007 Share #19 Posted January 24, 2007 My favorite: Summicron 35/2 (IV) pre-asph, i think this lens draws better (nicer) than the asph version... (i had an asph but sold it, and bought the pre-asph instead...)
woodyspedden Posted January 24, 2007 Share #20 Posted January 24, 2007 I flip between the 28 cron and the 35 lux. But if only one lens allowed........28 cron Woody Spedden
