Ok, this is not an off topic thread ... and I think it's a great chance for Leica - as I've read on the web site of Jiji Press (a wire agency in Japan), Hoya's CEO Hiroshi Suzuki is now considering the resale of Pentax's camera business after the merger/acquisition:

Jiji Press News Report in Japanese

Remember in the past few months people have been adding into the wishlist of a R10?

Auto focus, focus confirmation, anti-shake, in camera process engine, weather sealing ... etc.? And medium format digital under development for Guy and a number of other posters interested?

What do you guys think about this? ... and folks from Leica, are you reading this? Now this is not Panasonic ... it's serious camera business. :)

It's not done ... Rob.

Apparently, when questioned about the future of Pentax's camera business during the annual accounting meeting at Hoya on January 22, 2007, the CEO replied that they're evaluating the value of the camera division and looking for opportunities of resale NOW.

well such mammoth mergers are complex for manufacturers

much of it is in the medical field

they plan to sign April 1 2007

and it will be completed Oct 1 2007

they estimate 771 mill in stock to swap

Japanese firms are seldom, if ever, sold to non-Japanese firms. Somebody like Panasonic or Nikon would have a better chance than a Leica or more likely Samsung. On the other hand Kodak did buy Chinon (dormant) and Mamiya was picked up by foreign investors. Sad news Simon.

Interesting news. Howerver, apart from the opportunity to rebadge the Pentax DSLR bodies and sell them with an R mount, what else would be in it for Leica? Leica's management are having a hard enough time coping with their own niche product line - I can't see how they would relish taking on the whole Pentax camera division.

I am a little concerned over the Leica financial situation looking at the past 2-3 years of financial results.

If you combine that with the extra financial stress of the M8 launch, recall and the almost 10% fall of the US dollar since photokina, it must be hurting financially. I'm not sure what has happened with R9/DMR sales but I would bet they have been extremely slow during this period.

It would be a good thing in my opinion to have a significant growth partner/path such as with Pentax.

So Pentax knows how to build camera's- so does Leica. Leica invented AF, the Digilux3 and other Panaleica's have Leica's OIS anti-shake, etc- I believe here is not much new Pentax can teach them. It would be a nice name and expertise to buy for a non-camera electronic giant that wants to take on Canon and Nikon. Philips perhaps?

Just got a K10D. I gave up on Leica R after the R7 due to poor local service and went Nikon digital. The best option for Pentax would be with Sigma. Pentax makes great digital bodies and the joint optical range would be more than a match for Canon or Nikon. PMA could have some interesting conversations going on.

Cheers Pierre
