ski542002 Posted January 24, 2007 Share #1 Posted January 24, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello: A number of weeks ago, one of the two Leica dealers in my area told me no more DL-3's, which I posted on this forum. I've heard otherwise on this forum and was going to place my backorder this week. Went to my other Leica dealer and he said... no more fulfillment of DL-3 backorders, per his Leica rep. He continued... their alottment from Panasonic is finished and they're releasing something "better" at PMA. These dealers (dealers, not me) heard it from their Leica contacts, I'm just looking for some opinions from this group. Maybe they'll have a cleaner chip in the next version, making a great camera even better! CD
Advertisement Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 Hi ski542002, Take a look here Another unsubstantiated (not from me) DL-3 rumor!. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stunsworth Posted January 24, 2007 Share #2 Posted January 24, 2007 So far this week we've been told that a. The DMR is being discontinued b. The D-Lux 3 is being discontinued. I'm glad I bought my M8 before that got the chop.
Riley Posted January 24, 2007 Share #3 Posted January 24, 2007 getting interesting isnt it ?
carstenw Posted January 24, 2007 Share #4 Posted January 24, 2007 There are different ways to read this. My take is that the DMR is going to be phased out in favour of an R10, and that maybe Leica is done re-badging cameras. That could be a good thing. We all assume that the M8 launch was somewhat disastrous, but if it was planned that a certain amount of fixing would be done, it is even possible that things are going well, and that Leica is returning to core business. Then again, one could read it as just rumours, or even pending armageddon. We'll have to wait and see what happens.
Riley Posted January 24, 2007 Share #5 Posted January 24, 2007 probably depends what they get out of what are perceived to be re badged cameras monetarily speaking it may be quite worthwhile these are certainly popular cameras and quite the prettiest things around too i still hold the view that Leica have more than a hand in the design intellectual capital is considered a high commodity in German businesses when the first model was released it was quite unlike any other Panasonic camera and has a distinctly Germanic appearance to it as does M8 of course, which is akin to a 60's model Mercedes
Guest malland Posted January 24, 2007 Share #6 Posted January 24, 2007 I still think all this is nonsense: neither Leica nor Panasonic are going to pull cameras — the D-Lux 3 and the LX-2 — that started shipping in November and that have been selling well. —Mitch/Johannesburg http://www.flickr.com/photos/10268776@N00/
ski542002 Posted January 24, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted January 24, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) It's nonsense, unless Panasonic/Leica was testing the waters, found success and want to make it better and stop the noise complaints (maybe a viewfinder?). If they can release an updated model at the same price point, I'll be glad for the progress. If they jack the price, it'll be out of my range for a camera that, Leica-lens-or-not, is still basically in the point-and-shoot category. Guest malland Posted January 24, 2007 Share #8 Posted January 24, 2007 Considering that there are the same complaints about the Venus III engine on the whole Panasonic range of cameras, it's still unrealistic to think that they would supplant a camera that started shipping in only inNovember. They could do change the JPG processing through a firmware upadate, but don't seem to be doing that. As for an optical viewfinder, they could have introcuced that when they went from the LX-1 to LX-2 (or the D-Lux 2 to D-Lux 3), but it's also obvious that, like Ricoh with the GR-D, they did not want to increase the size of the camera for a second-rate viewfinder, which is all that is possible to include in such a small camera. But you can keep on dreaming if you wish. —Mitch/Johannesburg http://www.flickr.com/photos/10268776@N00/
Riley Posted January 24, 2007 Share #9 Posted January 24, 2007 the issue with the finder is easy to see rangefinders do not have long zooms i would think that is why they are being left out because they cant cover the full range of the zoom and apparently EVF are quite unappreciated when they are included
J Mitchum Posted January 24, 2007 Share #10 Posted January 24, 2007 I believe when Leica has Panasonic make something they have them do a limited production run. When they are sold out thats it until a new model arrives. So Panasonic will probably introduce an LX-3 at PMA and Leica the D-Lux4. Probably just more megapixels crammed into a tiny sensor, an ISO boost that does more harm than good and some sort of face recognition. I'm hoping Leica will one day take at least one compact digital in house and give us a digital version of the CM.
Guest malland Posted January 24, 2007 Share #11 Posted January 24, 2007 Four-month model runs — November–January — are not what companies aim for: it simply doesn't make any sense. —Mitch/Johannesburg http://www.flickr.com/photos/10268776@N00/
carstenw Posted January 24, 2007 Share #12 Posted January 24, 2007 There was a similar rumour some time ago about the D-Lux 3, and it was disspelled when someone found out that there was going to be a second run. This could easily be the case here too, of course.
Guest malland Posted January 24, 2007 Share #13 Posted January 24, 2007 Yes, it was started by the original poster — and now he's done it again. Carsten, this whole thread is about the D-Lux 3 again. It's really very silly. —Mitch/Johannesburg http://www.flickr.com/photos/10268776@N00/
carstenw Posted January 24, 2007 Share #14 Posted January 24, 2007 Argh What a waste of time.
ski542002 Posted January 24, 2007 Author Share #15 Posted January 24, 2007 I started the first thread, based on comments from reputable dealers, one of which has offices and warehouses in numerous major cities in the States. The dealers received their info FROM LEICA, NOT ME. I would say it's not silly when the comments come from the company that's selling the bloody camera. Some people don't have money to burn everytime a camera company comes out with the next greatest thing, that doesn't meet the expectations associated with it's storied history of producing a formidable product. CD
carstenw Posted January 24, 2007 Share #16 Posted January 24, 2007 And why did you start this thread, after hearing in the first thread that another run was planned?
ski542002 Posted January 24, 2007 Author Share #17 Posted January 24, 2007 Because this morning when I spoke to the dealer, they told me their Leica rep said, no more runs. Leica said it, not me... to reiterate, Leica said it. I'm not the one that said the run was discontinued, a representative of Leica told that to my dealer. In the first thread, if someone from Leica said there will be another run, someone also from Leica very recently said, no more. Which Leica employee was correct, the employee from the first thread, or the employee that was the impetus for this thread? I just want the best camera for my money, and am willing to wait till they get things sorted out. Maybe it's best we put this to rest and let time be the judge? Regardless of how it comes out, I hope to either have a dLux-3 (in its current form), or its replacement in the next few months! CD
carstenw Posted January 24, 2007 Share #18 Posted January 24, 2007 Well, let's wait then. I believe whoever in the first thread said that it takes a significant effort to switch the production lines at Panasonic to produce a different camera at any given point in time, but it only makes sense that if a camera sells out quickly, that another run be scheduled. Let's see what happens in, say, two months. If the D-Lux 3 is still available, then either it didn't sell out as fast as reported, or there has been another run. In either case, if after PMA no replacement has been announced, then I am sure that buying one will not be a big mistake.
