mattpelletier Posted February 1, 2011 Share #1 Posted February 1, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am about to buy an M9 and will be traveling internationally with it extensively. I want to make sure I find insurance that will cover theft/loss and a warranty that will cover accidental damage (e.g. drops, etc.). What kind of insurance have people bought (in the US) and what was your experience? How about extended warranties? Thanks in advance! I'll have some other questions I'll post separately but I wanted to get this one out of the way so I can place my order ASAP. Cheers, Matt
Advertisement Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Hi mattpelletier, Take a look here Insurance / extended warranty recommendations and experience. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
dave_d Posted February 1, 2011 Share #2 Posted February 1, 2011 If you are using your camera as an amature you can buy a camera floater for your homeowners or renter insurance policy that will cover your equipment. If you are using your camera professionally you will need to buy a business insurance policy that is specific to photographers. The important thing is to deal with a knowledgeable agent that understands your needs and concerns as a photographer. I have a Travelers business policy that I am happy with and I know my agent deals with photographers all over the US and he is knowledgeable about the photography business. Here is his info if you want to contact him: http://www.lawleyinsurance.com/files/ProfessionalPhotographers.pdf
tdtaylor Posted February 1, 2011 Share #3 Posted February 1, 2011 Matt, There have been quite a few recent threads on this subject- try the search tool. Note that insurances vary greatly from company to company, and especially country to country. My homeowner's rider cover my equipment for loss or damage anywhere in the world, no excluded countries, full replacement value. In various threads, it has been noted that this is about as good as it gets, and most policies have numerous exclusions for speicific events and countries. FWIW, I am an non-pro in the US and am with Encompass Insurance. I can't insist enough to read the details of the policy- your milage WILL vary. mattpelletier Posted February 1, 2011 Author Share #4 Posted February 1, 2011 Thanks, I'll look into both of those, though I don't have homeowner's insurance or renter's insurance. I'm moving abroad and don't have a house or apartment in the states. I was trying to buy a policy once without having to pay every month for it. I did try searching but "insurance" doesn't turn up much that happens to deal with insurance. I'll try looking around some more. If there are specific threads you know of I'd love links. Perhaps "insurance" isn't the right term. Thanks, Matt
dave_d Posted February 1, 2011 Share #5 Posted February 1, 2011 Matt, If you are a student you may be able to insure your camera under your parents homeowners policy.

Cheers, Matt Matt, If it's for personal use, you can do a floater on your house policy. However, damage and so on probably indicates a Commercial Policy. I have such a policy in the $600/yr range, with a $500 deductible. Covers theft, loss, breakage, stupidity, etc. Send me an email and I'll connect you to my ins guy.
