Leica CL/CLE vs Fuji X100

Many of us have been begging Leica to remake a modern CL. It was a great size and fantastic camera. Here is a comparison between the X100 and the CL and CLE.

CL 121x76x32(w/o lens protrusion) 510g with 40/2 lens 0.60x View finder mag

CLE 124.5x77.5x32(w/o lens protrusion) 520g with 40/2 0.58x view finder mag

X100 126.5x74.4x34(w/o lens protrusion) 445g with 35/2 0.50x view finder mag

I would say that is pretty darn close in size and lighter to carry with far greater capability (shutter speed, flash sync, exposure range, AF, etc.).

The viewfinder magnification is less critical because you have AF in the X100 and MF is done via magnified EVF image.

I have no idea. The X100 isn't available yet, so anything you read about it (pretty much) is conjecture, apart from the fact that it's a digital camera with a fixed lens and a fancy viewfinder. I don't own an X1.

Sorry.

Without an interchangeable lens, it's nothing like a modern CL. Nor is the X1 for that matter.

The X100 might be a modern Leica CM, but that's a different camera altogether. Obviously.

Given that the CL only had three lenses available, 28mm, 40mm and 90mm and that given its short RF base accurate focusing could be challenging with the 90mm and that most people owned it with just the 40mm it isn't that different from a practical standpoint.

I think you are comparing aardvarks and oranges, due to the fact that both are described as a camera.

The CL and the X100 both take pictures (well, the CL does, the X100's ability in that department remains to be seen)

They were both made on Earth, and both have glass at one end and a means of recording an image.

Beyond that they are completely different in concept and execution.

It's a bit like going into a decent Trattoria and a Dominos and ordering a pizza. One is light, thin, made with care, tasty and satisfying. The other comes in a red, white and blue box and may as well be consumed with the box intact.

Regards,

Bill

:D :D BTW, Barjohn, the Elmar-C 90/4 worked quite well on the CL. Same for the M-Rokkor 28/2.8 on the CLE. There is really one only way to compare the X100 to the CL: for Fuji to launch an X101 with 75mm or 90mm equiv. lens and for us to buy X100 + X101 = $2.5K+. Neat little camera otherwise, very tempting indeed. But digital CL it isn't, has never been and will never be ;)

On the one hand, there is a significant difference between cameras with fixed lenses and cameras with interchangeable lenses. Or else we wouldn't need the terms to distinguish between them. For me, a camera with a fixed lens is like a piano with one note (excepting some cameras with zooms of adequate range).

"most people owned [the CL] with just the 40mm" - A basic rule of intelligence analysis is never confuse intentions with capabilities. A country that can hit you with missiles (or a camera that can mount different lenses) is qualitatively different from a country that can't hit you with missiles (or a camera that has a fixed lens) - regardless of their intentions.

OTOH, I take barjohn's point regarding the viewfinder. Heck, Barnack Leicas (except maybe the IIIg) have 50% viewfinders. I'm all for an optical viewfinder in an X2 or X3.

I actually made the post as a size & weight comparison. Whether one goes to changeable lenses or a zoom lens, size & weight rapidly increase. At some point you cross the line where you might as well have taken an SLR with a zoom lens as it will actually be more compact and weigh less overall. Anyone that has carried an M8 with just 3 lenses knows this is not a light weight kit.
