tobey bilek Posted February 2, 2011 Share #21 Posted February 2, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) If you have no idea what you are doing, take a friend who knows Leica to a store that sells them. Take a trip to New York and go to B&H or Adorama. Buying something on the auction site is a gamble that piece will be as described or that you even receive something other than a piece of wood in the package you signed for. Stuff happens. You really have not advised if you want new or used lenses, fast 1.4 oe slower like 2.8, older or newer designs, limit yourself to Leica only, film or digital camera, CV lenses or Zeiss considered, Besa cameras as an alturnative to Leica, or what kind of budget you have. In my estimation, you are starting into something very complicated and navigating the waters alone is difficult. I can tell you any Leica Lens made since 1955 and is coated will make decent pictures. Older film bodies like M2 or 3 may need lots of expensive maintenance that takes time to get done. They are age and material issues plus normal wear. Do not expect to buy one and not do some maintenance. In general, the newer the lens, the better it performs in wide open or one stop down. After that, they are all similar. Then again you may get lucky on E-Bay. Read Ken, he is not all that bad, get some ideas, than bounce them of this forum. When I started, I was fortunate to have the largest dealer in the country near by. I could try/return anything used I wanted. Ideal set up. New Leica lenses went from $300 to $800. I bought most of mine then.
