Guest Essemmlee Posted January 28, 2011 Share #1 Posted January 28, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I was blown away by the quality of the images produced by this inexpensive combination. The tiny Sony is fitted with a metabones adapter to allow use of any M lens. As well as the images being of excellent quality, the camera is so small it's almost, but not quite, pocketable. It's also nice to be able to extend the lens by the crop factor. Of course, it's manual focus. But then, so is my M9.

ho_co Posted January 28, 2011 Share #4 Posted January 28, 2011 SM, I'd also like to see something shot by the combo. You're right, the NEX 5 is a jewel of pocketability, but I think adding the 75 Summilux decreases that advantage just a tad!
Guest Essemmlee Posted January 29, 2011 Share #5 Posted January 29, 2011 In response to requests, these 2 are typical examples. The top photo is with the 28 Cron and the lower photo is the 75 Lux (taken using the articulated LCD at ground level) . Both pictures St Ives, Cornwall, England. I don't think much of them at internet quality levels but on my 27 inch mac they are sharp and detailed. I can tell the difference between the Sony and the M9 but it really is minimal. As for size with the 75 Lux - obviously the 75 is a big old unit and adds significantly to the size of the sum. However, as a second camera in your bag, the Sony takes up very little space and adds to your creative portfolio. By the way, focusing isn't the easiest with the 75 Lux but it is manageable. The 2nd is magical. I have felt it is the Leica lens that makes the most difference and not Leica digicamera itself, followed by not having an AA filter. If we could fit via adapter any lens, say a cheap m42 on the M9, i think we would find that its not the M9 that does magic. I have wondered about the NEX i read it has a weak AA filter. The only thing I am waiting for is hopefully the next NEX to have more hands on controls. That articulated LCD i have had similar on Olympus E330 it is rather useful. ho_co Posted January 29, 2011 Share #7 Posted January 29, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Very nice stuff! Thanks for posting. Do you use primarily M lenses, or do you also use the Sonys?
vicpeh Posted January 29, 2011 Share #8 Posted January 29, 2011 I currently have the "el cheapo" 75 Summarit on the NEX and it is already fabulous. Can imagine the superiority of the 75 Lux!
Guest Essemmlee Posted January 29, 2011 Share #9 Posted January 29, 2011 Do you use primarily M lenses, or do you also use the Sonys? I only use the 28 Cron, 50 Lux and 75 Lux on the NEX 5 because they are in the same bag. The Sony lenses are really poor quality although I do have the 16mm and the 18-55mm (they came as a kit) and my wife is OK with them. The real benefit of the Sony is as a cheap, easy and tiny assistant to the M9. It fits neatly into my Billingham Hadley in a front pocket and doesn't add much weight to the kit. I am definitely not a Sony employee and have no links with Sony; Mmm - I do have a Bravia TV. I am a bit of a Leica fanboy though.

Apart from being faster, the Summilux-M 75 mm is in no way superior to the Summarit-M 75 mm in terms of optical performance and beauty of out-of-focus rendition. Guest Essemmlee Posted January 31, 2011 Share #11 Posted January 31, 2011 Haha, digital camera imaging principle is very clear, I have used in digital cameras. I think the Nikon is the best OK, seems a reasonable, if unrelated, view.
vicpeh Posted January 31, 2011 Share #12 Posted January 31, 2011 OK, seems a reasonable, if unrelated, view. It all depends... I have shot, compared and prefer the output from the X1 compared to a D300S with AF 24 f/2.8D. The Nikon combo needs more work in PP to get what I like.
