I have 3 and trying to get all my facts straight but every camera has had a battery failure of some sort . Personally i think there are some bad batteries or the voltage is dropping to low and it fails. This is not a camera issue but a battery issue and it's performance at less than full charge

Hi Guy,

Thanks. Once you remember what happened to them, it would be great if you could answer the poll questions so that I can have the data.

Best,

Sean

1. One M8 with 1.09 preinstalled (=second generation)

2. Yes, twice

3. Yes

4. -

5. -

6. -

7. -

8. I belive both times the battery was rather full.

I did not notice static in those cases but both times it was just after getting from inside to an outside area (maybe 5 C) but at the same time the failure did not occur when taking the first picture but after a couple of shots. In fact this happened both times when I was doing a number of shots (4-5) in a rapid sequence (in single photo mode) and I noticed afterwards when the camera was working again that the last photo had not been saved on the SD-card. This made me think (and this is my hope) rather of a firmware problem where the software was crashing which Leica might be able to fix with an update rather than a hardware problem.

My feeling to let' get tis speculation to another thread

1. One M8 used continuously since early November, 2006

2. Yes, first generation...no software or hardware update.

3. Battery was about 1/2 used. Took a shot. Put M8 back in neoprene case. About 5 minutes later, I tried to take a shot and it was dead. Pulled battery and re-inserted. No go. Put in fully charged spare battery. No go. Removed and re-inserted spare. Started up. Noticed that M8 must have gone completely dead. I was shooting .DNG as I always do, and now it was set to .Jpgs. This all happened at very high altitude in the desert (way up in the mountains.) We were in a restaurant/bar. Static electricity is very possible in these conditions.

Never happened again.

4. Yes

8. Half

I'm not sure if you want my response because you say, "owned for more than a week," and my M8 failed during the second day of use. I'm going to answer your questions anyway.

1. Zero, but I owned one for 2 days before it failed.

2. Yes, the camera failed as described in "D" and was 2nd generation, Firmware 1.09.

3. No

4. No

5. No. The interval was about 15 hours.

6. Yes, and yes.

7. Not yet. It was just received by them yesterday.

8. I did not note battery level, but it was near full charge. I shot less than 50 images total. There was no static electricity in the area.

1. one (2nd generation, but only in my possession for 1 1/2 wks, 500 exposures)

2. no problems

Let me qualify that very slightly. Near the end of the first battery charge, I had a slow startup, turned it off and on, continued shooting but discovered that I had reverted to all Jpeg. I reset things the way I wanted them and this hasn't happened again. Time of day clock was not affected.

Sean: Have owned one M8 (though it is now in Solms...) Purchased November 6th. Waiting for it to be sent back to me.

Have twice had battery drain issues, but not precisely the scenarios you've described here and before.

In both cases I have had a battery unaccountably drain -- as from three bars to a dead camera in the blink of an eye.

Recharging battery has fixed things, at no small opportunity cost. JB

I own one M8

It is second generation with 1.09

Freezing has happened twice -

Both times rectified by removing the battery (almost full) and replacing

Second malfunction took a few tries before it would revive the camera. I finally kept it out for about half and hour and it worked OK when I replaced it.
