Carl E Posted January 23, 2007 Share #1  Posted January 23, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi  Being new to the forum I have looked for advice on what 28 mm lens to choose for my M6 0.58x, and hopefully a later M8. I have an Elmarit-ASPH 28 on order, but the supply situation being what it is, I am now thinking of perhaps getting a 4th version (E46) pre-ASPH in stead (Despite the fact that used pre-ASPH 28's seem to be almost the same price as a new ASPH 28).  So far, I have not been able to find much in tems of direct comparison between the pre-ASPH and ASPH Elmarit-28. Puts' article showed the MTF graphs and had a couple of comments, but no more than that. Can anyone comment on the relative merits of the two from a practical user point of view?  Thanks for your help  Carl E
Eoin Posted January 23, 2007 Share #2  Posted January 23, 2007 Hi Carl,  Did you check SH Photo in Germany, they have a new 28 f/2.8 ASPH in stock....... Leica - M Lens 2,8/28mm ASPH. Elmarit-M NEW! 11606 with EU warranty - SH photo  There is also the non asph 2nd hand version as well Leica-M 2,8/28mm Elmarit-M 1809 - SH photo  And another 2nd hand non asph with 6 bit code Leica-M Lens 2,8/28mm Elmarit-M 11 809 with 6-bit - SH photo  I have bought from them before and find their customer service top rate.    This is the Vat free price, if your within the EU add 19% to that price or find the EU prices page on this site.  Best regards  Eoin
Maciel Posted January 23, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted January 23, 2007 Wait. Â The pre-aspherical is generally considered to be inferior by a fair margin, most actually consider it to be inferior to the VC Ultron 28/1.9. (Usual sources...) Â You be these lenses to be used for a long time, likely to be passed on the next generation - a few weeks will not make a difference. Guest magyarman Posted January 23, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted January 23, 2007 I try 2,8/28-ASPH than decided stay mine IV. ASPH lens is nice smaller look like 2,0/35-IV oba building qualitat down from IV. Weigths is many less, got to be take away something inside him ora put instead plastick. Fotos qualitat I dont can see differents. Erwin tell like this <<Wide open (2.8) the lens does not show the crispness of the 2/28mm (at 2.8) or the previous 2.8/28mm wide open.>>. I think is small differents anyway, I dont can see it. Is both good lens, depent you like small weigths ora building like tenk.

Not really my experience i must say. Bokeh is different but sharpness is very close at f/2.8.  28/2 at f/2.8: http://tinyurl.com/rv7w/EPSN2739_crop02web.jpg  28/2.8 at f/2.8: http://tinyurl.com/rv7w/EPSN2742_crop02web.jpg  28/2 at f/2.8: http://tinyurl.com/rv7w/EPSN2739_crop01web.jpg  28/2.8 at f/2.8: http://tinyurl.com/rv7w/EPSN2742_crop01web.jpg  (Epson R-D1, 200 iso, 100% crops)
macusque Posted January 23, 2007 Share #8 Â Posted January 23, 2007 I never used the 28 Elmarit asph, but I had the latest 28/2.8 pre-asph and now I use the 28 Summicron asph. The 28/2 asph is phenomenal, but the 28/2.8 is only slightly less phenomenal... Frankly, the main reason I got, and keep, the 28/2 is because it is an f/2 lens. Â I can't find any reason to spend twice for a new 28/2.8 asph instead of a used 28/2.8 IV, the only one being that the new asph is smaller and maybe it doesn't get into the framing...
