Advertisement Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 Hi Guest guy_mancuso, Take a look here 19, 21-35, 28-90 and 35-70. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ptomsu Posted January 25, 2007 Share #42 Â Posted January 25, 2007 Got my 28-90 today, made a few testshoots over the whole range as well as some "Macro" and I am simply overwhelmed. Â This lens is handy, fast enough (also in snowy grey Austria using ISO100) and gives a superb unit together with R9DMR. And Guy, you were absolutely right, it produces some of the best colours I have ever seen! Â If you do not own one, try to get one! Â Peter
macusque Posted January 25, 2007 Author Share #43 Â Posted January 25, 2007 Peter, Â do you find the 28-90 has better image quality than the 35-70/4 ? I realize it is more convenient because of its wider range and higher speed, but I'd like to know if it is much better than the 35-70, quality wise. I doubt it could be visibly sharper, maybe it has better colors ? Or better bokeh/3D ? Or both ? The 35-70 is also quite a bit smaller and lighter, isn't it ? As far as "macro" ability, the 35-70 should be better also, though nothing beats the 100 Apo-Macro... Â Thanks
ptomsu Posted January 25, 2007 Share #44 Â Posted January 25, 2007 Marco, Â well my experience with the 28-90 is pretty short, since I own it only for some 12 hours. What I can say so far is that it is very easy to use, typical Leica feeling, for me actually much better compared to the 35-70, since it is thicker and I have relatively big hands. And the weight is not much more (my feeling) compared to the 35-70. Â The optical quality so far as I can say is outstanding! And this must be the case, it is a Leica own calculation, is ASPH and is much newer design than the 35-70. Â My impression is that it is even sharper (better contrast) - while the 35-70 had always more "flat" colours and contrast, the 28-90 seems to produce more lifely results. Â More details will follow, as I get more results, especially also under different conditions (sun, night shots etc). Â One thing which should never be forotten, it has a much higher price than the 35-70, which IMHO goes for a high part into making the extended range at least same or maybe better quality than the 35-70 and maybe also compared to some primes. But the 35-70 is for its price an outstanding and good lens, which I really loved. Â Main reason for me to change was to be able to survive in most cases with only 1 lens, which is not much larger and heavier than the 35-70, and has at least same high quality. AND - if a FF R10 comes this would then give the real perfect universal lens :-)) Â Peter
gdb Posted January 26, 2007 Share #45  Posted January 26, 2007 Peter, I quite agree with you. I never used the 35-70, but I owned the 28-90 for one year and a half, and it really covered 80% of my needs. For the 20% remaining, I used the 19mm and the old 180 Apo-Telyt. With this combination, you face almost every photographic situation...  Cheers Gérard
macusque Posted January 26, 2007 Author Share #46  Posted January 26, 2007 Thanks Peter for your fair answer.  I got the 19 Elmarit and I just won on ebay a used 80-200/4 at a very good price. Moreover I'm going to get a used 180 Apo-Summicron within a week !  So I'll have no money left for anything but a lens cap...  But I understand, like Gérard pointed out, that 19 + 28-90 + 180/2.8 Apo (maybe the newer model which accepts the 1.4x Apo) would be probably the more convenient R-setup out there... Optical quality is outstansing and it is still low weight for this focal length and aperture!  Woud you give me some feedback on the 4/80-200, I am also interested in this lens as a light weight travel lens in tele range.  Peter

macusque Posted January 26, 2007 Author Share #49  Posted January 26, 2007 Peter,  I will let you know how I like the 80-200, even if with the 28-90 I'd probably prefer the 180/2.8 Apo (faster, better and it gets the 1.4x). In my case maybe the 180 is a bit too distant from the 35-70.  Btw I heard in another forum that the modification on the 180 Apo-Elmarit (as per Leica USA) costs over 600 $ and 8 weeks at Solms, a bit too much for my taste... But 300 € seems an adequate amount to make this beautiful lens even more flexible! How long did they take to do the modification ?
