D-Lux3 - Flash Performance

I got to play with a D-Lux 3 for a while tonight, and given that we were indoors, tried with the flash. I have to say I was quite impressed by the results (compared to say my Canon P&S) - including the 16:9 format with flash.

Have people generally been happy with the flash performance, allowing for it's obvious limitations of size, and the fact that it's a P&S and not a large add on / off camera flash?

I have found the flash to be quite inadequate....In order to get a goo flash image you have to be set at iso 100 and be very close...if you get more than 5 feet...th faces on images look like watercolors and are very dark

Low light photography has been one of the most frustrating aspects of this little gem (I have the D-Lux 2). My pictures in good sunlight have been spectacular (even without the use of a viewfinder, which I do miss). Flash photography is 50:50 at best - and yes, the lower the ISO the better.

There is an excellent external flash solution available. Please see the thread

Mind the thread is in German but the pics tell all. However, the problem of the watercolor effect remains. I think that is a Leica/Pana bug and becomes most obvious when you photograph faces.

Hello:

I've yet to receive my dlux-3, but have thought about another flash unit to go with the camera. I'm going to purchase an optical slave that will just attach to the bottom of my ancient old old Vivitar 283. I plan to set the dlux-3 flash to fire at a lower setting, just enough to trigger the off-camera 283. This should allow me to bounce the flash off a wall or using a card to get the results I want. Pure speculation now, but just my thoughts.

I will say that the 283 is bigger than, and weights more than the camera, so it will be used in this way quite infrequently!
