Lens serial numbers.

The 6-bit coding of lenses was introduced along with the introduction of the Leica M8 in 2006, right? Well, I have a Leica lens with a serial number of 397XXXX which is originally 6-bit-coded (6-bit code mentioned on the cardboard box, i. e. no retrofit job) so it must have been made in 2006 or later. The list however suggests that lenses with serial numbers below 4000000 were made before 2004. So the list can't be too reliable ... at least not for the time after the year 2000.

My understanding is that Leica lens serial numbers are issued in blocks, and that the actual lenses may be built somewhat later than the date that the block suggests depending on the rate of production. This may help to explain the discrepancy

Does anyone else have a different 'take' on this?
