Guest kissov Posted January 14, 2011 Share #1 Posted January 14, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) My new M9 and two lenses have been at Leica NJ for focus adjustment. They have had the camera and lenses for a week, when should I start bugging them to get my new M9 and new lenses back to me? Thanks.
Advertisement Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 Hi Guest kissov, Take a look here LEICA NJ. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
samuelphoto Posted January 14, 2011 Share #2 Posted January 14, 2011 The folks there are very, very busy. Even something simple like changing out a lens flange to a 6 bit takes 3-4 weeks. It's first in first out, you just have to get into the queue. They should send you a form that looks sort of like an invoice with a statement of the work to be performed and the cost. Even getting that takes time. I'd say that you might call them if you don't hear from them in 3 weeks.
ho_co Posted January 14, 2011 Share #3 Posted January 14, 2011 kiss, Allendale sent you an estimate form. On it is stated the estimated date for completing the work. You'll have your stuff back about a week after that. ... when should I start bugging them to get my new M9 and new lenses back to me? ... That's a very dumb question, IMO. Why would you want to "start bugging them"? Do you do that with your mechanic, or your dentist, or your girlfriend? They have your stuff; they've told you when to expect the work to be finished. And now you're asking when to "start bugging them"? You can't be serious.
tdtaylor Posted January 14, 2011 Share #4 Posted January 14, 2011 I sent in a lens to be 6 bit coded 12/28, and the ticket with the estimated delivery date read 1/21, which was crossed out and replaced with 1/28. 4 weeks over the holidays is pretty good in my thinking. In October I sent them a 90 APO which needed the front glass replaced , and that took about 5 weeks, which I found very reasonable In the past I have had repairs/adjustments take 3 months, but for the last year the service has been very good- I just wish they emailed or had a status page- it would probably help reduce the anxiety of not knowing if they received it, etc. In the past, I have had items, like a new M9, severely out of focus and was leaving on a trip to Europe in two weeks. I talked to Sarah and she was able to move it through the system and get it back to me. I am not one to always ask for a rush, but when you truly need it, they have come through- at least for me. photolandscape Posted January 14, 2011 Share #5 Posted January 14, 2011 My new M9 and two lenses have been at Leica NJ for focus adjustment. They have had the camera and lenses for a week, when should I start bugging them to get my new M9 and new lenses back to me? Thanks. From my experience, you're just in the early stages. I sent my M9 and 3 lenses in on about 12/4/10 asking them to address the red edge issue if possible. I know they ended up replacing the sensor before Christmas. Then they had about a 2-week holiday, and came back to work on the 3rd. They were also supposed to check and adjust my RF with all three lenses, which compared to a sensor replacement, strikes me a relatively simple. They had hoped to ship everything to me by today, but I haven't heard anything so I am guessing it'll be late next week before my stuff arrives--a little over 6 weeks. The lens/rangefinder adjustment areas seem especially busy and backed up.
Guest kissov Posted January 14, 2011 Share #6 Posted January 14, 2011 Howard my buddy, this was a brand new camera purchased on December 12th they ( Leica NJ) sent UPS return delivery on Jan 3 they never said and I did not indicate that they told me anything. Howard why so rude? if they had told me I would not have asked the forum. Why are you the forum troll, Howard get a life.

Jager Posted January 15, 2011 Share #8 Posted January 15, 2011 I sent my Noctilux in for a recalibration the first of December. I got it back earlier this week. About 5-6 weeks total. As has been mentioned, Leica NJ was closed the last week of the year. They are very busy this time of year. (And it wouldn't surprise me if the couple of winter storms they've already had up there have introduced another couple days delay). They're good people, doing the very best they can... ho_co Posted January 15, 2011 Share #9 Posted January 15, 2011 kiss, what childish responses! Goes with your moniker, doesn't it? You're the one who asked "when to start bugging them." That's not the question of a mature individual. It's inane to ask here when you know you can call Allendale. You've already called them several times from what you said earlier. Come to think of it, your complete lack of courtesy when I answered your question about Allendale taking a break in December should have been a warning. Maybe you just want to tell us about your "new M9 and new lenses"? BTW--congratulations on the new acquisitions! Why did you need to send them in immediately after purchase? That's a bummer! ... they ( Leica NJ) sent UPS return delivery on Jan 3 they never said and I did not indicate that they told me anything... I didn't say you had received the acknowledgment, only that it had been sent. It takes about two days for a camera to enter their system after receipt, and about a week after that you'll receive the estimate via post. I won't comment on the "UPS return delivery." Sounds as if all you wanted to know was what the schedule and procedure are after Leica gets the equipment. If you'd asked that, I think you'd have been happier. ho_co Posted January 15, 2011 Share #10 Posted January 15, 2011 ... I just wish they emailed or had a status page- it would probably help reduce the anxiety of not knowing if they received it, etc... Terry, I agree and have often thought the same thing. They're still using what looks like the same system they had in the '70s. Apparently Solms has a tracking system, but some on the forum who have used it complain that it shows only the standard information of where your equipment is in the queue. I don't know how it could show more than that, but it's natural to want a bit more hand-holding. As small as Allendale's staff is, asking for an email indicating receipt or shipment would just put a greater burden on them, and probably slow down processing. In the periods where they're slow, they've said so up front. Like you, I've always found them very helpful when push came to shove.

Seriously, my man, do keep us posted how the paperwork works out. You can apologize then, as I'm sure you will. You find it unreasonable to ask about sending in new equipment? I think there's likely a backstory there.

They have had the camera and lenses for a week, when should I start bugging them to get my new M9 and new lenses back to me? Thanks. To the original poster, don't take this the wrong way, but what's a "focus adjustment"? What are the symptoms that your camera and 2 lens combination exhibited that it needed to go in for service? Guest kissov Posted January 16, 2011 Share #17 Posted January 16, 2011 Jaybob, Leica NJ requested that I include the lenses when I returned the M9 body. The problem was that the rangefinder "focus" was not the same as the lens focus. Leica NJ said this was becoming a more common problem with the large sensor. I did extensive focus tests, most users might not even notice focus problems, magnification is necessary in lightroom to see "soft" images. For a SLR with a kit lens the focus may be acceptable but I expect more of Leica.
msk2193 Posted January 16, 2011 Share #18 Posted January 16, 2011 Jay, My brand new M9 also failed to focuse properly and I too sent body and 4 lenses (at Leica's request) back to them less then a week from receiving the camera in May of 2010. They took two weeks to return the system to me in perfect working order. From what they told me, film is thicker and layered therefore minor focus issues are not detectable in the final print. Sensors are a microscopic thin and flat surface onto which the image is displayed and therefore focus needs to be much more precise. I've been a happy camper ever since, and have already forgotten the agony of having to wait for the camera, and then for the repair!

Guest kissov Posted January 16, 2011 Share #20 Posted January 16, 2011 Very frustrating, hence my original post, Leica said they would try to turn it around quickly but after a week its driving me crazy. Leica has had my M9 twice as long as I had it before I sent it in. I owned an M8 and still own a D2 (Leica upgraded sensor) and a D-Lux3 with no problems.
