I own a D200 and like it and I think it would be a good compliment to a M8. I use it along side a M3 and find I take the M3 most times (But not having to do developing and scanning is nice. Just wish I could find a M8).

Since the Nikon has such a large selection of Lenses, from Nikon and other makers, it's good choice.

 

D200 with the right choice of lenses is for sure a perfect complement to M8. I own the D2X, which is somehow better than the D200, but would prefer the D200 because of size and weight. Especially in combination with the 18-200/DX lens it is nearly perfect for 97% of all photographic tasks I want to fulfil.

Replying to original poster: D200 is a good camera. Files are not quite as good as those from 5D, and the wide end suffers from the 1.5x crop factor. OTOH, the ergonomics are good, flash exposure (and the triggering of remote flashes) is excellent. Viewfinder is very good, surprisingly.

 

I will sell my D80; the differences in the button operations are irritating when working with both.

 

I use primes mostly (35/2, 50/1.4, 85/1.8 and the really surprising Tokina 12-24/4); they are inexpensive, and overall the kit is more portable than the equivalent 5D kit, which is why I switched.

 

I still use the LC-1 (Panasonic's D2), and its optics are outstanding. When the L1's kit lens is available, I may try one of the new Olympus bodies; that combo might even outperform the LC-1. If it does, I will buy that combination, too. Completely OT, I will get a Sigma DP-1 as soon as they are available.

E400 is in for global release, perhaps relabled E4 or E3

Oöympus already spread the rumors about a successor for the E1 at least 3 years ago! So if the big wonderful successor happens this year, which has then a 10MP sensor, what is this in reality? Nothing else than their comitt that they did not make it to scale the 4/3 system. Beause in tehir initial announcements they said that this system will easily show up to 18MP in the next years. There are they today? After 4 years not even a Pro model with 10MP.

 

What you usually call such behavior? This company lies!

 

Sorry, but 4/3 is in best case a me too system and has really NO advantages but rather more drawbacks.

for a phd Peter, thats a pretty sweeping and extaordinary exchange

 

if they said E3 is out next month, and after 3 years nothing happened, you would be right

the truth is pretty dam far from that

 

the advantages are that the system is designed for digital from the ground up

rather than make the camera suit an SLR chassis

and the sensor suit the lenses

 

and as that it follows no-one,

as oposed to APS C which trail around each other

 

CCD's have far more R&D investment than CMOS, being numericly more common

it is more likely that it will advance further

The advantages of the E1 to me are: I like it, it suits me, it's weatherproof and I didn't pay much money for it new. It can also take excellent photographs.
