Viewfnder vs Zoomfinder

The 21-24-28 zoom finder is not very well liked in the Leica world..... I bought one years ago and sold it within a few months. It distorts (not a big issue really), I did not find it particularly sharp and is rather large. Not knowing which camera you have and which lenses you use, it is hard to make a suggestion as to what would be a better solution for you.

I use single focal length finders (Leica or Voigtländer) - brighter and sharper than the Leica Zoom Finder. If you absolutely have to have a Zoom Finder, check out the one made by Voigtländer - while about the same size as the Leica one, it is brighter and much more versatile.

Thank you. I have a M9 and I'm about to buy a 21 or 24.

Be sure to check out the Zeiss T* 21mm or Zeiss T* 25/28 because they are amazingly clear, virtually distortion free and less than 2/3rds the cost of the inferior (imo) Leica vf. The Voigtlander can't hold a torch to it either.

Pete.

I feel that for those two lenses on an M9 a zoom finder is a bit of an overkill. For an excellent cost to quality ratio, I would recommend the Voigtländer finders (21mm and 25mm - they do not make a 24mm). If you want the best, I agree with Pete - the Zeiss finders are superb and better than Leica.

A comment on the Voigtlander finders: they are relatively inexpensive, bright and sharp with frame lines which are visible under most lighting conditions - and easily seen if wearing spectacles. I have both the 21mm and 25mm versions and manage happily with them.

My only adverse comment would be that both are conservative in their coverage. I use the 21mm lens on my M8, where it gives the equivalent of 28mm on full-frame, and find that the 25mm finder gives almost exactly the correct field of view using the outside of the rather thick bright line frame. Using it with a 24mm on an M9 might be an ideal solution for accurate composition.
