WHAT TO DO? My family gifted me at Christmas with a Nikon D3100...thinking this would jump start me into taking pictures once again (stopped using my Nikkormat FTN long ago when digital took over!). I want to exchange the D3100 for a Leica D-Lux 5. However....they cannot imagine why I want to return a CMOS sensor, interchangeable lens camera and get a CCD 'point n' shoot', as they call it. I know the difference!! I'm a street shooter. I want a stealth, wide angle, fast f2 lens with low light capability....not the entry level D3100 with f3.5 14-55 kit lens. They put a lot of time into choosing the D3100 and feel that I'm making a mistake...when I know I'm not. What to do?

Yeah well - my girlfriend keep buying sweaters for me, in colors and patterns I am never going to wear in public, after years she still don't realize what I do and don't like in sweaters, let alone in lenses (though she is pretty good at that since she know my dealer).

If you are not excited about the dslr, exchange it for something you will enjoy playing with. its a gift and a toy.

Don't really know your pictures so I can't say based on that, but you say you are a street shooter, then im pretty sure your family already know that you know upside down on a camera, though it sounds like you put it down for a while. ;)

I didn't see a "Reply" button, so using the "Quote" button to comment on Bo's message to me.

BO...Thanks, so much for your comments...glad you agree. Can't wait to become buddies with my new D-Lux 5. And, lo and behold, I just received an 'understanding email' from my family with the D3100 receipt attached.... so I'm ready to make the exchange. Just noticed that your postings include a link to some of your images....how can I do that?

You have a very sophisticated family if they understand the difference between CMOS and CCD sensors.

Yes...my niece originally attended photography school in Rochester...BUT...but had a change of heart and got a law degree... and for some reason is now a 'visual tech' teacher! She loves D-SLR's...so I'll have to do some good shooting with the D-Lux 5 to justify the exchange of her gift.

(1) i gotta get educated . . . i thought CCD's were inherently better than CMOS and manufacturers are going to CMOS because it keeps costs down.

(2) my wife gave me a "Coach" brand wallet for Christmas that matches one of her purses with designs all over it . . . when she noticed that I am still using the duct tape wallet my son gave me years back, she got all flustered . . . she's gonna hafta get over it i guess.

you will LOVE the Dlux-5 . . . . i love my LX-3 enormously even though i have a Nikon D60 + 4 lenses + many other cameras . . . you will have a ball with it !

Interesting Daveleo...I'm going to have to check that out. I think I'll love the D-Lux5 too. At 67, I'm not a big zoom user and I'm SO over carrying around a multitude of lenses, even if the camera body itself is lightweight. I WILL need to learn all about Lightroom, and I still haven't mastered my iPhoto software!

there is a discussion over in the DPReview forum under Nikon>D40 etc etc about the sensors issue.

I hope I get this right . . . ? . . in their APS cameras Nikon used CCD sensors up through the D60 and then swithced to CMOS for their newer APS-C cameras . . . lot's of Nikon geeks think that was a step backward for them and they still hang onto their D40's because "the pictures are nicer"

check that out.

but that's photographically irrelevant . . . the DLux / LX cameras produce oustanding photos and are very very jacket-pocketable and "handleable".

about 75% of the photos i have posted here are with my Panasonic LX-3 (comparable to the DLux-4)

Look down below in this subforum . . . there's a similar thread about the Dlux-5 vs a Canon EOS60d

tell them you love them dearly but they made a mistake.

No problem, am happy to swap my black Panasonic LX5 for your D3100:D Any interest?

Say "thank you"? You may also want to buy a fast wide Nikon lens.

yes, well, it cuts both ways.

I have the very excellent Nikon 35/1.8 lens on my D60 and it is a wonderful combination, but . . .

the view angle (field of view) is not wide at all . . . it's equivalent to about a 52mm lens in 35mm format although the depth perception of course is still at the 35mm focal length . . . that field of view is definitely not "wide angle".

that said . . . if you hold onto the Nikon APS camera, i can absolutely recommend their 35/1.8 lens for it's cost-effective quality (that's not a backstabbing compliment . . . it's a really nice lens !!).

that combo is still not a wide angle, pocketable kit, but hey life's full of compromises :p
