schimmey Posted January 21, 2007 Share #1  Posted January 21, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi  Can anyone explain why my b/w prints are coming out very much darker than how the prints appears on my monitor? So much so that a lot of greys are black & highlights mid-grey.  Is there any way that I can alter the image profile in photoshop for the print so that what is printed is what I see... or do I need to alter the monitor - which as far as I am aware is correctly set-up (using OS X's monitor calibration).  Thank you.  Paul Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

For starters, what is your monitor, what program do you use to print, which printer, on what paper, with what profile. Your monitor may be too bright if you only used the OS/X calibration utility. When I calibrated my MacBook Pro glossy with Eye-One, I had to turn the light down to about 70%, and I have been told that the new 24" iMacs are very bright and need to be turned down even more. Then, there is the whole topic of color management and profiles for your printer and paper... You will get a lot of guidance from the experts on this forum who are very generous with their time and knowledge, but you need to give them a little more info to let them help you. chrism Posted January 21, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted January 21, 2007 The other thing to remember is not to have Photoshop and the printer driver both attempt to manage the colour (albeit greyscale). In the PS print dialog, I set it to No Color Management, set the printer profile to the appropriate printer and paper (eg SPR2400 Premium Glossy since you have one of these machines), then click on Print... and you get the standard printer dialog, which you must make sure is set to the 2400. In the lower pop-up menu you will find Print Settings - enter paper type and below that, Advanced B&W Photo, Quality is Best Photo, and Color Toning set to Fine Adjustment. Next use the Pop-up menu you found Print Settings in to go to Color Management, and set the Tone to Normal. You might want to save all this in the Preset pop-up menu as something like B&W Glossy.
